Jury Duty follows Ronald Gladden, the only person in its staged courtroom scenario who does not know the trial and the people around him are part of a comedy production. James Marsden plays an exaggerated version of himself; the other principal performers are named below, though the available official credits do not establish a complete actor-to-character roster.
How the cast fits the hidden-camera premise
The original season centers on Ronald Gladden, a real participant who believed he was taking part in a documentary about the judicial process. The trial and the jurors around him were staged by performers. The series was created by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, with Cody Heller as showrunner and Jake Szymanski as director, according to the Peabody Awards credits.
Gladden is not one of the actors. He had been a solar contractor in San Diego before participating, as he told Amazon. His genuine reactions are the center of the setup; the performers build the fictional world around him.
Verified principal cast
The Peabody Awards’ talent list names the following performers. It is an ensemble credit, not a role-by-role cast list, so names below are not paired with unverified character identities.

Who does James Marsden play?
Marsden plays a fictionalized, exaggerated version of himself—not a character presented as an accurate portrait of the actor. Amazon describes the role as an entitled, petulant Hollywood figure. In an interview with Amazon, Marsden explained the setup: “We’re surrounding him with scripted, bizarre circumstances and eccentric, sort of weirdo characters, and seeing how he reacts, but it’s never targeted at him.”
How the production built the scenario
A Television Academy report published July 11, 2023 says the eight-episode comedy was built around a three-week trial scenario and filmed for 17 days at a real courthouse. Those are production details, not the duration of the finished series.

Casting director Susie Farris said the casting notice drew 5,000 replies and the team saw close to 1,000 people. Those figures describe the casting process. The production also used a fake focus-group scenario to see how performers riffed with real participants; character traits and stories were partly drawn from the actors who were cast. Director Jake Szymanski summed up the stakes of finding a participant who could sustain the premise: “If they break on day three, the whole show is over,” as quoted by the Television Academy.
Is there a second season?
Yes. The follow-up, Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat, moves the hidden-camera setup from a courtroom to a corporate offsite at a family-owned hot sauce company. Its unwitting participant is temporary worker Anthony. Keep that season’s cast and characters separate from the original season; the names listed in this guide are the original season’s Peabody talent credits. Amazon’s current series overview describes both seasons.
