Here’s how the film distinguishes them, what the creators have said about their designs, and where Aquilops character Dolores and the Spinosaurus fit in. The measurements below are fictional, in-universe specifications, not scientific measurements of prehistoric animals.
What is the dinosaur mission in Jurassic World Rebirth?
The film’s official synopsis describes a covert team sent to an island research facility to collect DNA from three colossal creatures, in a place where dangerous dinosaurs have been left behind. Director Gareth Edwards identified the targets in an interview as the Mosasaurus, Titanosaurus and Quetzalcoatlus: one aquatic, one land-dwelling and one flying creature. Universal Pictures’ film page lists the movie as a 2025 action-adventure science-fiction thriller directed by Edwards and written by David Koepp, with a 2-hour-14-minute runtime and a PG-13 rating.
The three DNA targets
- Mosasaurus: the aquatic target, encountered in the sea sequence.
- Titanosaurus: the land target, described in the interview as an herbivore.
- Quetzalcoatlus: the flying target. The team chooses to take DNA from an egg rather than the parent.
Which creatures are engineered monsters?
The key distinction is that the Distortus rex and Mutadon are presented as products of genetic engineering, not as real prehistoric species. Koepp put the film’s premise plainly: “These things are monsters because someone made them,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
Distortus rex, or D. rex
Entertainment Weekly’s creature guide describes the D. rex, short for Distortus rex, as a failed InGen attempt to engineer a Tyrannosaurus rex using fragments from other animals. It is depicted as mostly quadrupedal, with bloated legs, a large head and an extra pair of arms. Edwards described the concept this way: “In my mind, it was basically a T. rex cranked up to 15, and it had gone wrong because of that.”

The same guide gives the fictional creature’s in-universe dimensions as 26 feet tall, 47 feet long and approximately 20,000 pounds. Those numbers describe the film’s monster, not a measured animal. The creature’s distorted anatomy makes it a visual contrast to the filmmakers’ stated approach to ordinary dinosaurs. Koepp said: “Normally, we yell at each other if somebody says ‘monster’ instead of ‘animal,’ because they should always be motivated as animals are.”
Mutadon
Mutadon is a fictional hybrid design combining a raptor and a winged pterosaur, according to the Entertainment Weekly interview. Edwards said the team explored many concepts before settling on the winged-raptor direction. The interview gives the character’s in-universe height as 6 feet 7 inches and weight as 550 pounds; these are fictional specifications, not biological data.

What are the film’s other notable creatures?
Mosasaurus
The Mosasaurus is both one of the three DNA targets and an aquatic threat in the film’s sea sequence. The interview reports an in-film length of 100 feet and weight of 40,000 pounds. Edwards cited Jaws as an inspiration for the sequence. The dimensions are attributed movie specifications, not real-world measurements.
Titanosaurus
The land target is described as an herbivore. Edwards likened its scale to “a Brachiosaurus on a massive scale”; the interview reports an in-film height of 50 feet and weight of 30 tons. These figures belong to the movie’s creature guide.

The flying target has a 30-foot wingspan according to the interview. Rather than take DNA from the adult, the team chooses an egg, making the creature’s nest central to the mission.
Spinosaurus
The Spinosaurus is not one of the three named DNA targets. The interview discusses multiple Spinosaurs and their ability to hunt on land and in the sea. Universal’s bonus-feature description also refers to the Mosasaurus and Spinosaurs in the ocean sequence.

Dolores, the Aquilops
Dolores is an Aquilops named by Isabella Delgado. The character also appears in official licensed products: Universal announced a Baby Dolores Aquilops product, and LEGO lists Baby Dinosaur Dolores: Aquilops (76970). The character is a smaller, distinct part of the film’s creature roster, not one of the three colossal DNA targets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How complete is this dinosaur list?
This guide covers the three mission targets and the additional creatures specifically described in the cited film and product material. It is not a complete species census: the available descriptions do not establish every dinosaur or creature appearing in the movie. That distinction matters because a creature’s presence in a sequence, a creator interview or a licensed product does not by itself make it one of the mission’s three targets.
