Según el comunicado de la Fiscalía del Condado de Los Ángeles, el tiroteo ocurrió alrededor de las 3:25 a. m. del 25 de mayo de 2024, en el centro de Los Ángeles. Wactor salía del trabajo y se acercó a su automóvil. Murió en un hospital. El caso fue asignado a la división de homicidios del Departamento de Policía de Los Ángeles.
Las autoridades describieron el encuentro como un presunto intento de robo del catalizador del vehículo. La fiscalía alegó que Robert Barceleau disparó a Wactor. Esa descripción forma parte de las acusaciones: no debe confundirse con una determinación judicial de culpabilidad.

Cargos y situación judicial conocida
La Fiscalía del Condado de Los Ángeles anunció cargos contra cuatro personas el 19 de agosto de 2024. Los casos no tuvieron todos el mismo desenlace conocido:

La fiscalía presentó cargos y alegaciones, no una prueba definitiva de culpabilidad. Las condenas de Gutierrez y Olano corresponden a delitos relacionados de menor gravedad; no son equivalentes a las acusaciones de asesinato contra Barceleau y Estrada. El 24 de junio de 2025, ABC7 informó que un juez rechazó desestimar los cargos contra Barceleau y Estrada y consideró que había evidencia suficiente para que el caso prosiguiera. Esa decisión permitió que avanzara el proceso; no fue un veredicto de culpabilidad.
