John Farnham’s family said in September 2026 that his health had deteriorated in recent months and that he now needs continuous oxygen, uses a wheelchair and receives 24-hour nursing care at home. He will remain at home and cannot attend the September 20 tribute concert. The “exciting family news” refers to son James welcoming a child; James spoke about the baby and family life in an earlier interview in August.
What John Farnham’s family said about his health
In a statement issued ahead of the September 20, 2026 tribute concert, the Farnham family said John’s health had deteriorated in recent months. The family said he requires continuous oxygen support, uses a wheelchair for mobility and needs round-the-clock nursing care at home. They also said he would remain at home and could not attend the concert. ABC News reported the family’s statement.
The statement describes his health and care needs; it does not identify a cause for the deterioration or say that his cancer has returned. Those points have not been established in the cited account.
What James said about his new baby
The family news involving James is the birth of his son. In an interview reported by 7NEWS on August 20, 2026, James said the family had been living together since the baby’s arrival and spoke about the child’s bond with John. 7NEWS wrote the child’s name as “Jet”; Cabrini Health gives his fuller name as “Jett John Farnham.” Read 7NEWS’s August interview.

James said: “It’s been really nice to live there and wake up every day and see mum and dad with Jet.” His comments were an earlier family update, not a description of John’s condition after the September statement.

John Farnham’s cancer history and the tribute concert
Farnham underwent surgery for a cancerous tumour in his mouth in 2022. His official news archive published a statement about his surgery and recovery in August 2023, including that he had undergone radiation treatment and further procedures. The official archive contains the statements and announcements. ABC News later reported that he received the all-clear in 2023. Read ABC News’s coverage.
The cancer history is relevant background, but it does not establish that cancer has returned or explain the deterioration the family described in September 2026.

The September 20 tribute concert raised funds for Head and Neck Cancer Australia. The organisation’s chief executive, Nadia Rosin, told ABC News that “about 14 Australians [are] diagnosed with head and neck cancer every day.” That is a general figure about diagnoses in Australia, not information about Farnham’s condition or prognosis.
