After winning the men’s Elimination Chamber match in Toronto to earn a WrestleMania 41 championship match against Cody Rhodes, Cena attacked Rhodes and aligned with The Rock. The selected reactions reported at the time capture a range of responses—not a representative poll of WWE fans.
What happened at Elimination Chamber
Cena won the men’s Elimination Chamber match, setting up a championship bout with Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41. The post-match attack on Rhodes—and Cena’s alignment with The Rock—turned that match setup into a storyline betrayal. The event sequence and contemporary reaction examples were reported by The Takedown on SI.
How people reacted to Cena’s turn
Posts and commentary reflected different reactions to the segment. They are useful snapshots of individual responses, not evidence that fans as a whole agreed on what the turn meant.
Shock and disbelief
Rhea Ripley responded with a shocked-face emoji. Other posts described the moment as shocking, reflecting the surprise of seeing Cena attack Rhodes after decades of being known primarily as a heroic figure.

Praise for the moment
Some reactions celebrated the dramatic impact: one post called it “ABSOLUTE CINEMA.” That kind of praise speaks to the power of the segment for those viewers; it does not, by itself, establish approval of the longer storyline.
Jokes and criticism
Drew McIntyre called Cena “the Hypocrite.” Fightful also documented responses from Brandi Rhodes, Pat McAfee, Bronson Reed, and others. Together, these examples show that reactions ranged from surprise and amusement to criticism and commentary on the story’s implications. Fightful’s roundup and The Takedown on SI’s coverage report selected posts, not a measured breakdown of audience sentiment.

Why the turn prompted debate about Cena’s character
The moment landed because Cena had spent much of his career as a face—the wrestling term for a heroic character. A commentator described the turn as fascinating in light of that history. That reaction is distinct from judging whether the new direction would work over the longer story: viewers could find the betrayal shocking or compelling while still debating whether it fit Cena’s established persona.
What Cena said about becoming a heel
On the March 17, 2025 episode of Raw in Brussels, Cena addressed the crowd by framing his relationship with fans as abusive and arguing that they expected him to perform as their puppet. He rejected the usual character labels: “I am not a babyface. I am not a heel. I am a human being.” F4W/Wrestling Observer and CBS Sports reported the promo. This was storyline dialogue: Cena’s character’s accusation, not an independently established description of fans’ conduct.

On March 5, Cena had posted: “How others respond to us tends to say a whole lot more about them than it does about us. Evaluate it and don’t take it personal.” WrestleTalk reported the post. It offered an earlier public response to reactions surrounding the turn, before his later Raw promo spelled out the character’s position.

Triple H later discussed the conversation that led to the turn in an interview with the Daily Mail, as reported secondarily by The Independent. That account provides some context for the creative decision, but it should not be mistaken for a direct WWE statement or a full behind-the-scenes record.

Was the internet’s reaction unanimous?
No. The published examples show a range of reactions, but the consulted coverage supplies no representative statistic measuring approval or disapproval. Individual posts—even emphatic ones—cannot establish what fans overall thought. The clearest takeaway is that the betrayal generated immediate attention and conversation, while opinions about the segment and the longer storyline were not all the same.
