The turn reversed the heel persona Cena had established by betraying Rhodes after Elimination Chamber—and it gave their next match a different emotional premise. What stands out is the compact arc: a shocking betrayal, a public-facing reversal, then an immediate in-ring test.
How Cena became the antagonist
At Elimination Chamber on March 1, 2025, Cena won the men’s Chamber match to earn a championship challenge at WrestleMania 41. The decisive character shift came after Cody Rhodes rejected The Rock’s offer: Cena attacked Rhodes, a betrayal WWE described as shocking and as an apparent alignment with The Rock. WWE’s Elimination Chamber results establish the turning point that made the later babyface return meaningful.
The attack mattered because it disrupted Cena’s familiar heroic presentation. Instead of approaching the WrestleMania opportunity as the celebrated challenger, he became the person Rhodes had to confront. That reversal supplied the story’s central tension: could Cena step back from the role he had chosen, and would Rhodes accept the change?
What happened on the Aug. 1 SmackDown
A WhatCulture Wrestling review published Aug. 2 identifies the previous night’s segment with Rhodes as “John Cena Turns Babyface.” That supports Aug. 1, 2025 as the date of the turn and the broad characterization of the segment. It does not provide a verified transcript or exact promo dialogue, so Cena’s words should not be reconstructed or quoted as though confirmed.

The shift is compelling as a piece of wrestling storytelling because the hero role did not erase what came before. Cena’s return to the babyface side followed a specific betrayal, with Rhodes directly involved; it was not simply a reset detached from the championship story. Whether the reversal felt earned is a matter of interpretation, not a measured audience consensus.
Why the turn worked as a SummerSlam setup
The turn arrived in the final build to a championship rematch, rather than as an isolated character moment. At SummerSlam 2025, Cena and Rhodes met again for the title; WWE’s SummerSlam event page documents the match and its result. The rematch became the immediate in-ring follow-up to the SmackDown reversal.

- WWE Premium Live Events Elite action figures capture some of the most iconic moments!
- Each Superstar comes with accessories that include interchangeable hands for different moves!
- Deluxe articulation allows authentic play and display of signature moves and poses!
- Highly detailed TrueFX technology adds impact with life-like faces!
- Fans can collect all the figures in a series for additional Build-A-Figure parts that create a new figure (each sold separately, subject to availability).
- The betrayal gave the feud a clear cause. Cena’s attack after Rhodes refused The Rock made their conflict personal and legible.
- The face turn changed the question, not the history. Cena could return to the heroic role, but the earlier attack remained part of the story Rhodes and viewers had to reckon with.
- The timing carried the change into a major match. SummerSlam tested the new alignment instead of leaving it as a standalone TV moment.
For viewers who enjoyed the turn, that compressed structure is the strongest reason: the character reversal connected directly to the rivalry’s next consequential chapter. The available sources do not establish how broadly fans agreed or document a specific crowd reaction, so claims of universal approval would go too far.
How the farewell tour adds context
WWE later described 2025 as Cena’s farewell tour and announced that his final match would headline Saturday Night’s Main Event on Dec. 13, 2025. That context can make a late-career character shift feel especially loaded: a farewell year is also a chance to revisit the roles that shaped a performer’s public story. It does not, by itself, prove that the Aug. 1 turn was designed to produce any particular fan response. WWE’s announcement establishes the farewell framing and final-match date.

The later SmackDown appearance was a separate beat
Cena’s final SmackDown came on Sept. 5, more than a month after the babyface turn. WWE says Sami Zayn challenged him in an homage to Cena’s 2015 U.S. Title Open Challenge; Brock Lesnar interrupted, and the match ended in a no contest. WWE’s results for the Sept. 5 episode document that later farewell-tour moment. It is useful context for Cena’s 2025 arc, but it should not be confused with the Aug. 1 turn or the SummerSlam rematch.
