Brock Lesnar defeated John Cena in the opening match of WWE Wrestlepalooza on September 20, 2025, pinning him after six F-5s. WWE presented the bout as “one last time” during Cena’s retirement tour, but it did not publish a specific behind-the-scenes reason for booking it. The explanations beyond that storyline are attributed interpretations, not confirmed WWE intent.
Why did Cena and Lesnar meet at Wrestlepalooza?
WWE’s official preview framed the match as a final clash between longtime rivals while Cena’s retirement tour was winding down. The on-screen setup began after Cena lost to Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam in August 2025: Lesnar returned and attacked him. On the September 5 episode of SmackDown, Lesnar attacked Cena and Sami Zayn during their United States Championship match. WWE then billed the Wrestlepalooza bout as “one last time.”
WWE’s pre-event preview listed Lesnar ahead 4–2 in their one-on-one record. That was WWE’s own published figure before Wrestlepalooza, not an independently reported statistic. The setup made the match a high-profile test for Cena against an opponent he had historically struggled to beat, but WWE did not state that this record was the official creative reason for the booking. What did the “real reason” commentators suggest?
Matthew Rehwoldt’s pre-match view
Former WWE wrestler Matthew Rehwoldt, then a TNA color commentator, described the bout as a marquee match for Cena’s retirement tour and an opportunity for Cena to overcome a difficult rival. In comments from the Rebooked podcast reported by TJR Wrestling on September 17, 2025, Rehwoldt said: “So, this is just a marquee match. There’s no story like laid out.” That was his assessment of the match’s limited personal storyline, not a statement from WWE about its internal booking decision. How the result was interpreted afterward
After Lesnar won, Bleacher Report interpreted the decisive loss as a way to re-establish Lesnar’s dominance. That reading fits the finish, but it remains a reviewer’s analysis; it does not verify WWE’s backstage rationale. Bleacher Report’s Wrestlepalooza results and reaction

Why did the match open Wrestlepalooza?
