In a July 2024 interview with Men’s Journal, he rejected the idea that he issued Vergara an ultimatum or left because she did not want to become a mother again. His explanation was that the couple had gradually grown apart.
That does not completely erase Vergara’s earlier account. She said their different views about having children were central to the marriage ending. The most accurate conclusion is therefore not that one former spouse definitively proved the other wrong, but that they have offered different public explanations. The divorce filing itself cited only “irreconcilable differences.”
What Joe Manganiello said about the divorce
Manganiello addressed the breakup in a July 16, 2024 interview with Men’s Journal. He specifically disputed the widely repeated account that the marriage ended because he wanted children and Vergara did not.
He called that characterization “simply not true,” while also making clear that he did want children. According to Manganiello, he and Vergara discussed the subject during the first month of their relationship and tried to start a family during the first year and a half. He said he understood that Vergara might be finished having children and had told her that he would not leave if having a child together did not happen.

In his account, the relationship did not end because Vergara could not or would not have another child. Instead, he described the divorce as the result of “two people” growing apart.
“At the end of the day, we didn’t work, and that’s what happens,” Manganiello said in substance, describing the relationship as one in which the couple had grown apart.
He also objected to the way the story had been framed in some coverage. He rejected the suggestion that he was experiencing a midlife crisis, as well as the idea that he had presented Vergara with an ultimatum involving her body or her decision about motherhood.
This distinction matters: Manganiello did not say that he never wanted children. He acknowledged wanting them and said the couple had tried to have a family. His denial concerned the claim that this desire was the decisive reason he ultimately left the marriage.
What Sofía Vergara said about why they split
Vergara had already given a different explanation in a January 15, 2024 interview with El País. She said Manganiello was younger and wanted children, while she did not want to become an older mother.
Vergara became a mother at 19 and has one adult son, Manolo, from her first marriage. She said she felt she was ready to be a grandmother rather than begin motherhood again. She also said that any future partner would need to come with children of his own.

In a later interview with People, published in May 2024, Vergara explained the decision in more detail. She said having a child requires a major investment of time, energy and personal sacrifice. Considering her career, lifestyle and the condition of the marriage, she did not believe it would be fair to bring another child into the world if she could not give that child her full attention.
Vergara also described “no more kids” as a relationship deal-breaker. That makes clear that the subject was not merely a casual explanation offered after the divorce. In her public account, the couple’s incompatible plans for family life represented a fundamental conflict.

What did the divorce filing say?
The legal record is less specific than either person’s interviews. Manganiello’s divorce filing, reported in July 2023, cited “irreconcilable differences.” Court documents did not identify children, fertility, infidelity, sobriety, career demands or lifestyle differences as the personal cause of the breakup. ABC News reported the filing and later comments in the context of the dispute over the reason for the split.
“Irreconcilable differences” is a formal legal basis, not a detailed explanation of what happened inside a marriage. It confirms that the relationship was legally ending but does not determine whether Vergara’s account, Manganiello’s account, or a combination of factors best describes the private breakdown.

What reports existed about them living different lives?
Shortly after the separation announcement, Us Weekly quoted an unnamed source who said Vergara and Manganiello had been living different lives, were rarely on the same page and had reportedly been living separately for about a year. The same report contrasted Vergara’s more social lifestyle with Manganiello’s more home-oriented routine. An unnamed source also said there was no cheating.
Those claims should be treated as background reporting, not established facts. They were not sworn testimony, a court finding or a joint statement from the couple. A separate report summarized by El País described sources as saying the pair had gradually distanced themselves and that small differences grew more significant as their initial passion faded. Again, this is attributed source material rather than an independently verified account.
Was Manganiello’s sobriety a cause?
Another theory appeared in July 2023 coverage from AS USA, which cited an unnamed source claiming that differences between Manganiello’s long-term sobriety and Vergara’s drinking had affected the marriage. A second source reportedly said Vergara had been extremely supportive of his sobriety.
This remains an unverified report, not an established explanation for the divorce. Neither Manganiello nor Vergara identified sobriety as the definitive cause in the later first-person interviews that shaped the public discussion. It should not be presented as proof that alcohol or recovery ended the marriage.

How did Vergara respond to Manganiello’s account?
Vergara did not publicly endorse Manganiello’s explanation. In an August 2024 interview discussed by Us Weekly, she reportedly questioned whether Manganiello had actually said what was attributed to him. She indicated that one cannot always know exactly what another person said and that she was not going to call him to verify it.
