How to Play Spotify on Discord: Show Your Music, Listen Along, or Share Audio

Spotify on Discord can mean showing your song, listening together, or sharing audio in a voice channel. Here is the correct setup for each option, including Premium, mobile, privacy, and troubleshooting guidance.

The right way to play Spotify on Discord depends on what you mean. Connect Spotify to Discord if you want to display your current song. Use Listen Along if friends should hear the same music through their own Spotify accounts. If you want everyone in a Discord voice channel to hear Spotify, Discord can share application audio, but Spotify may automatically pause during voice chat, screen sharing, or Go Live.

The native Spotify connection is therefore not a normal music-bot command: it displays activity, opens Spotify, and supports synchronized listening rather than reliably piping Spotify’s licensed audio into a server voice channel.

Current labels: Discord’s newer settings use Activity Sharing for global activity visibility. Older guides may call the Spotify option Display Spotify as your status. You may see either label depending on your Discord client and version.

Choose what you want to do

Your goal Use this Premium needed? Important limitation
Show your current song on your Discord profile Connect Spotify and enable activity sharing Not documented as required for basic linking or status display Live status is most clearly documented when Spotify and Discord are running on the same PC
Listen to the same music as a friend Discord Listen Along Assume Premium for every participant for the most reliable session Spotify says Listen Along cannot be used while voice chatting
Invite people to a listening session Send a Spotify listening invite from Discord’s message box The same Listen Along restrictions apply The invite follows the active playback session and ends when playback stops
Make a voice-channel audience hear music Discord application sharing with audio Premium is not a solution to the broadcast limitation Spotify may pause when Discord detects voice activity, screen sharing, or Go Live
Let a group control a shared queue Spotify Jam, shared through Discord Premium is required to host and for remote participants to join remotely The session takes place in Spotify, not inside Discord
Share one song or playlist casually Paste its Spotify link into a Discord message No special requirement A link does not synchronize playback or create a shared queue

How to connect Spotify to Discord on desktop or in a browser

Connecting the accounts is the starting point for both Spotify status display and Listen Along. Discord’s current account-connection instructions are available in its Account Connections FAQ.

  1. Open Discord.
  2. Select the User Settings cogwheel near your username.
  3. Open Connections.
  4. If Spotify is not visible, select View More.
  5. Select the Spotify icon.
  6. Sign in to the Spotify account you actually want to use.
  7. Approve the connection and confirm that Discord shows the account as connected.

After connecting the account, check the two activity controls:

  1. In Discord, open User Settings → Activity Sharing and turn on Share my activity.
  2. Return to User Settings → Connections and make sure the Spotify-specific activity or status toggle is enabled. In some clients or older instructions, this appears as Display Spotify as your status.
  3. Open Spotify on the same computer and start a song. It must be actively playing rather than paused.

To check the result, open your Discord profile or ask a friend to inspect your profile or friends list. If privacy settings permit activity sharing, Discord should show Spotify activity with the current track, artist, album information, and a link that can open the song in Spotify. Discord’s status guide specifically describes Spotify playback on the same PC, so this is the most clearly documented setup for live status.

How to show what you are listening to

Once the account is linked, there is no separate Discord playback command. Start music in Spotify and let Discord detect it. The connection is designed to publish activity, not to upload Spotify audio to a Discord server.

If the song is not visible, verify these settings in order:

  • Spotify is playing music and is signed in to the intended account.
  • User Settings → Activity Sharing → Share my activity is enabled.
  • The Spotify connection’s own activity-sharing toggle is enabled under User Settings → Connections.
  • Your server-specific privacy settings allow activity sharing.
  • A detected game or another activity is not taking precedence over Spotify in your profile.

Discord’s Activity Sharing documentation explains that sharing can be controlled globally, by server, and for individual connected accounts. That is why an account can be connected successfully while its Spotify activity remains invisible.

How to listen along with a friend

Listen Along lets each participant listen through their own Spotify account while Discord coordinates the session. It is different from transmitting one person’s Spotify audio through a voice channel.

Join a friend’s active Spotify session

  1. Have the other person connect Spotify to Discord and start playing a song.
  2. Find that person in your Discord friends list, profile, or activity card.
  3. Look for the person to be shown as Listening to Spotify.
  4. Select Listen Along.
  5. Allow Spotify to open or begin playback through your own account.

This is Spotify’s documented route for joining a friend who is shown as listening to Spotify. The exact location of the button can vary between desktop, browser, and mobile clients.

Send a listening invitation in Discord

You can also invite someone from a Discord direct message, group DM, or text channel:

  1. Start playing Spotify.
  2. Open the relevant Discord DM, group DM, or text channel.
  3. Select the + button beside the message box.
  4. Choose the Spotify listening invite.
  5. Add an optional message.
  6. Send the invitation.
  7. The recipient selects Join.

According to Discord’s Spotify connection instructions, the invite updates as the song changes and indicates when the session has ended after playback stops.

Listen Along does not work during a voice chat

Spotify explicitly says that Listen Along cannot be used while voice chatting and recommends using a text chat instead. Joining a Discord voice channel is therefore not a substitute for joining a Spotify listening session. If you want synchronized music and conversation, use text chat for the Listen Along invitation and communicate separately using a method that does not put the Spotify session into a voice-chat state.

Do all participants need Spotify Premium?

For a dependable Listen Along session, assume that every participant needs Spotify Premium. The official documentation is not perfectly consistent:

  • Spotify labels Listen Along as a Premium feature.
  • Discord says a friend may receive an error if they do not have Spotify Premium.
  • Spotify also says that when a participant uses Spotify Free, the other listener may hear silence while advertisements play.

In other words, a Free account may not always behave the same way: it can produce an eligibility error or periods of silence depending on the host, participant, and client. The safest practical conclusion is to use Premium for everyone. Merely connecting Spotify to Discord or displaying your current song is not documented as requiring Premium; the restriction concerns synchronized listening.

Can you play Spotify in a Discord voice channel?

The native Spotify connection is not a voice-channel music stream

Linking Spotify to Discord does not provide a general /play command, server audio feed, or music-bot-style stream. It shows what you are listening to, lets others open the track in Spotify, and supports Listen Along through individual Spotify accounts.

Application sharing can capture audio, but Spotify may stop

Discord’s screen-sharing and Go Live features can share application audio on the Windows desktop app, macOS desktop app, Chrome, and mobile clients. Discord says application audio sharing is not available on Linux. In a supported client, you can start an application stream, select the application, and enable its audio when Discord presents the sharing controls.

That does not make Spotify broadcasting reliable. Discord documents Spotify’s automatic pause behavior when it detects voice chat, screen sharing, or Go Live. In particular, Spotify may pause after approximately 30 seconds of microphone transmission while music is playing. Discord attributes this behavior to Spotify’s personal and private-use restrictions and suggests using push-to-talk or reducing unintended microphone activation—not bypassing the protection. Read the Spotify Auto-Pause help page and Discord’s Go Live and Screen Share documentation for the supported behavior.

Important: Do not treat virtual audio cables, modified Discord clients, downloaders, or unofficial bots as reliable Spotify integrations. They may attempt to evade Spotify’s pause behavior or obtain audio in ways that create copyright, policy, privacy, account-security, or availability risks. Spotify describes its service as intended for personal, non-commercial use and does not authorize public broadcasting for businesses or similar environments. See Spotify’s public and commercial use guidance.

Mobile instructions and limitations

Connect Spotify from the Discord mobile app

  1. Open Discord and tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Tap the gear icon in the top-right to open settings.
  3. Tap Connections.
  4. Tap Add in the top-right.
  5. Select Spotify.
  6. Sign in and approve the connection.

Discord officially documents mobile account linking and mobile activity viewing. However, the dedicated Spotify-status instructions specifically describe Spotify playback on the same PC. Do not assume that every iPhone or Android setup will expose identical live-status behavior. Account linking, viewing a friend’s activity, joining Listen Along, and broadcasting mobile playback are separate capabilities; availability and button placement can depend on the device and app version. For the clearest documented live-status result, run Spotify and Discord on the same desktop computer.

Mobile Listen Along

Mobile listening sessions can end unexpectedly if the phone sleeps. Discord’s Spotify FAQ warns that the connection can be lost if the device goes to sleep and a song ends. Keep the device awake while testing or using a mobile session, and check whether aggressive battery-saving restrictions are suspending Spotify or Discord.

Spotify on Discord not working? Use this checklist

Symptom What to check and how to recover
Spotify is missing from Connections On desktop or browser, open User Settings → Connections → View More. On mobile, use avatar → gear → Connections → Add. If the account connection is stale, select the X beside Spotify, confirm Disconnect, and add it again. Reauthenticate the intended Spotify account; multiple browser sessions can make it easy to connect the wrong account.
Spotify is connected but no song appears Start a song directly in Spotify and confirm it is not paused. Check the global Share my activity setting and the Spotify-specific toggle. Confirm that the correct Spotify account is signed in. Check whether a detected game is taking precedence. Then restart both Spotify and Discord.
Listen Along or Play does nothing Select a playback device in Spotify or start a song directly in the Spotify client so Discord can identify the active Spotify device. Reconnect the accounts if necessary and try again from the friend’s activity card or profile.
The Listen Along button is missing The other person may not be actively playing Spotify, activity sharing may be disabled, or the connection may be stale. A voice chat can also prevent Listen Along. Check Premium eligibility, try a text DM or channel, inspect the friend’s profile rather than only the friends list, and send a direct Spotify invite using the message-box + button.
A mobile session ends unexpectedly Keep the phone awake while a song is ending, test without aggressive battery restrictions, and reopen Spotify and Discord if the device has slept. Discord specifically documents this sleep-related failure mode.
Playback stops abruptly between songs Turn off Spotify crossfade on the host’s account. Discord says crossfade can cause an abrupt stop for listeners during song changes.
Playback is delayed or not synchronized Some delay is possible; do not expect zero-latency synchronization. Set both the host’s and listener’s device clocks to update automatically and synchronize them with real time, as Discord recommends.
Spotify pauses during Discord use This may be Spotify’s documented protection rather than an audio-setting bug. Voice transmission, screen sharing, and Go Live can trigger auto-pause. Push-to-talk or reducing accidental microphone activation may help, but do not promise or attempt to defeat the protection.

Privacy: control who can see your Spotify activity

Connecting Spotify does not mean every Discord user must see your listening activity. Discord’s current activity controls are more detailed than the older single-toggle instructions found in many guides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Global activity: Open User Settings → Activity Sharing and control Share my activity.
  • Default audience: Discord provides choices such as Friends & All Servers, Friends & Small Servers Only, and Friends Only.
  • Per-server visibility: A server’s Privacy Settings can control whether activity is shared there.
  • Spotify-specific sharing: The connected Spotify account has its own activity/status control under User Settings → Connections.

Depending on these settings, friends or people who share a server with you may see current or recent activity. Discord explains the available choices in its Activity Sharing FAQ.

Stop sharing Spotify without unlinking it

  1. Open User Settings → Connections.
  2. Disable the Spotify activity or status toggle.
  3. If you want to hide other activity too, disable global Share my activity under Activity Sharing.

This leaves the account connected but stops its activity from being displayed, subject to the controls available in your client.

Disconnect Spotify completely

  1. Open User Settings → Connections.
  2. Select the X beside Spotify.
  3. Confirm Disconnect.

On mobile, open your avatar, tap the gear, choose Connections, and manage the Spotify connection there. Discord’s account-connection documentation covers the current desktop and mobile paths.

Alternatives to playing Spotify through Discord

Share a Spotify link

For a single track, album, or playlist, copy its Spotify link and paste it into a Discord message. This is the simplest option and does not require the account connection, Premium, or a synchronized session. It also does not synchronize playback or give the group a shared queue.

Use Spotify Jam for shared queue control

If the real goal is letting several people add songs and control a shared queue, Spotify Jam may be a better fit than Discord Listen Along. Spotify says Premium is required to host a Jam, and remote participants also need Premium to join remotely. Share the Jam link in Discord, then manage the listening session inside Spotify. See Spotify’s Jam requirements and instructions.

Use Discord screen sharing only when its limitations are acceptable

Application streaming can be useful for sharing an app visually or sending application audio to a supported Discord audience, but it is not a dependable way to broadcast Spotify. The combination of voice-chat detection, microphone transmission, screen sharing, Go Live, and Spotify’s personal-use restrictions makes Listen Along or Spotify Jam the safer choice for ordinary group listening.

What the Spotify–Discord connection actually provides

The integration is best understood as three connected features:

  1. Account linking: Discord associates your Spotify account with your Discord account.
  2. Activity display: Discord can show the current song and provide a way to open it in Spotify, subject to privacy settings and activity detection.
  3. Listen Along: eligible participants start playback through their own Spotify accounts in a coordinated session.

It is not a general-purpose Spotify audio relay for a Discord voice channel. Choosing the feature that matches the goal—status, synchronized private listening, a shared Spotify queue, or simply a link—avoids most of the confusing behavior described as “Spotify not working on Discord.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Spotify through a Discord voice channel?

Discord can share application audio on supported Windows, macOS, Chrome, and mobile clients, but Spotify may automatically pause during voice chat, screen sharing, Go Live, or sustained microphone transmission. The native Spotify connection itself is not a voice-channel music stream, so Listen Along or Spotify Jam is more reliable for group listening.

Do I need Spotify Premium to connect Spotify to Discord?

Basic account linking and Spotify status display are not documented as requiring Premium. Premium matters for Listen Along: Spotify labels it a Premium feature, while Discord warns that non-Premium listeners may receive an error. Spotify also notes that Free-account advertisements can create silence for another listener. For reliable synchronized listening, use Premium for every participant.

Why can my friend see Spotify activity but not join Listen Along?

The friend may not be actively playing Spotify, activity sharing may be disabled, the connection may be stale, or the account may not meet Listen Along’s Premium requirements. Voice chat can also prevent Listen Along. Try starting playback directly in Spotify, reconnecting both accounts, using the friend’s profile or activity card, or sending a Spotify invite from a text message’s + button.

Does sharing a Spotify link in Discord sync everyone’s music?

No. A pasted Spotify link opens the track, album, or playlist for each person but does not synchronize playback or create a shared queue. Use Listen Along for synchronized listening or Spotify Jam for collaborative queue control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Connect Spotify under User Settings → Connections and enable Activity Sharing to show your current song. Use Listen Along—preferably with Premium for everyone—when each person should hear synchronized playback through their own Spotify account. Do not expect the native connection to stream Spotify into a Discord voice channel, and remember that Spotify may pause when Discord detects voice chat, screen sharing, or Go Live.
