In a roughly 16-minute opening monologue, Kimmel addressed the controversy, defended political satire and free expression, thanked supporters and became visibly emotional while praising Erika Kirk’s forgiveness of her husband’s suspected killer.
Why was Jimmy Kimmel suspended?
On September 15, Kimmel criticized supporters of President Donald Trump for trying to portray the accused killer as “anything other than one of them” and for scoring political points after Kirk’s killing, according to Reuters’ September 24 account. ABC suspended production on September 17, describing the suspension as indefinite at the time. Nexstar and Sinclair also preempted the show on their ABC-affiliated stations.

Disney announced on September 22 that the show would return the following Tuesday after what it called “thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel. The company said some of his earlier comments had been “ill-timed and thus insensitive,” according to ABC Audio. The return came six days after the September 17 suspension and nearly a week after the original remarks.
What did Kimmel say in his return monologue?
He said he did not mean to make light of the killing
Kimmel addressed his earlier comments directly. “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it,” he said, as quoted by Reuters. The Associated Press described the opening as a mix of humor, pointed commentary and emotion.

He defended the space for political satire
Kimmel distinguished the importance of the show from the importance of being able to make it. “This show is not important,” he said. “What is important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this,” according to ABC Audio.
He also joked about a supposed condition for the show’s return: “To reactivate your Disney+ and Hulu account, open the Disney+ app on your smart TV or TV-connected device,” the AP reported. The line made light of the suspension and Disney’s decision to reinstate the program; it was not a statement of an actual viewing requirement.
He thanked supporters and praised Erika Kirk
The monologue included jokes about messages from people in Kimmel’s past and from other late-night hosts, as well as thanks to people who had supported the show. He discussed Disney’s suspension and reinstatement before turning to Erika Kirk’s remarks at her husband’s memorial. Kimmel praised her forgiveness of the man suspected of killing Charlie Kirk, describing the gesture as grace, according to the AP and Reuters.
After the opening and a commercial break, actor Robert De Niro appeared in a skit playing the FCC commissioner. Kimmel later returned to topical jokes, including one about a United Nations escalator that stopped while Donald and Melania Trump were ascending it, ABC Audio reported.

How many people watched Kimmel’s return?
ABC reported 6.26 million broadcast viewers for the return, according to Reuters. Reuters described it as the show’s highest-rated regularly scheduled episode and a 10-year high among adult viewers. The AP reported ABC’s rounded broadcast figure as nearly 6.3 million and specified that it did not include streaming services.
Online figures measure views on platforms, not additional unique people. The AP reported that ABC said the opening remarks had more than 15 million YouTube views by Wednesday evening, September 24. ABC also reported more than 26 million views across social media, including YouTube. Reuters gave a more specific, earlier breakdown: nearly 26 million social views by late Wednesday afternoon, including 15.3 million on YouTube and 6.3 million on Instagram. The differing totals reflect distinct reporting windows and rounding; broadcast viewers and social views should not be added together as if they were the same measure.

Could everyone watch the broadcast?
No. Although the program returned nationally on ABC, Nexstar and Sinclair continued to preempt it on some of their ABC-affiliated stations. That meant local over-the-air availability depended on the market. The AP said the groups together accounted for about a quarter of ABC affiliates; Reuters reported their owned-and-operated stations represented about 23% of U.S. households. Those figures describe different things—affiliate count and household reach—and are not interchangeable.
ABC Audio reported at the time that full episodes were available the next day on Hulu and Disney+, with clips on YouTube. Streaming catalogs and local carriage can change, so check the services or station listings for current availability.
How did people react to the monologue?
Responses were sharply divided. Turning Point USA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet called the monologue “not good enough,” while actor Ben Stiller called it a “brilliant monologue,” the AP reported. Former ABC and CBS executive Ted Harbert told the AP that the episode reflected how political divisions had reached an area he described as relatively orderly for decades.
These comments illustrate contrasting reactions; they are not a poll or a measure of what viewers overall thought. The monologue drew attention both for Kimmel’s remarks and for the suspension, affiliate preemptions and debate over political expression that surrounded its return.
