That decision changed three days later: Sinclair announced on September 26 that the program would air on its stations that evening.
What happened when the show returned to ABC?
ABC announced on September 22, 2025, that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would return to the network schedule the next day, after a six-day suspension. Sinclair said it would continue preempting the program on its ABC affiliate stations while discussions with ABC continued, replacing it with news programming. ABC News reported on Sinclair’s initial decision, and Sinclair’s September 22 statement set out the company’s position.
The network’s decision to put the show back on its schedule did not mean every locally operated ABC affiliate would carry it. ABC set the network schedule; Sinclair made a separate scheduling decision for its affiliate stations. On September 23, Sinclair affiliates continued to preempt the broadcast, as did stations affiliated with Nexstar.
When did Sinclair reverse its decision?
On September 26, Sinclair announced it would end the preemption and air Jimmy Kimmel Live! that evening. The company’s September 26 statement announced the change. Nexstar separately said it would resume airing the program, as CBS News reported. The two station groups made separate decisions; Nexstar’s action should not be attributed to Sinclair.

What did Sinclair say about its decision?
In its September 26 statement, Sinclair referred to violence, including a shooting at an ABC affiliate station in Sacramento, and discussed broadcasters’ programming judgment and free speech. The company wrote: “While we understand that not everyone will agree with our decisions about programming, it is simply inconsistent to champion free speech while demanding that broadcasters air specific content.” That is Sinclair’s stated position, not an independently established explanation of its motives.
What criticism did lawmakers make?
A September 24 letter from senators criticized Sinclair’s decision in light of the local nature of broadcast licenses. The letter records the lawmakers’ criticism; it is not a court or regulator’s finding that Sinclair violated a license or an affiliate agreement. The Senate Commerce Committee letter documents their position.
