Kimmel missed that night’s scheduled Jimmy Kimmel Live! taping to be with his family, then shared the news on the following evening’s broadcast.
Why Jimmy Kimmel missed the Monday show
Katie gave birth while the show was scheduled to tape on Monday, May 19. Kimmel explained the next night that he chose to be at the birth rather than at the studio. ABC News reported his explanation: “Katie and her husband Will had a baby girl right at the time we shoot our show last night, so I decided to be there instead of here.”
His absence was for that family event; the reporting describes a missed Monday broadcast, not an ongoing cancellation of the program.
When and how Kimmel announced the birth
On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, Kimmel told viewers why the previous night’s show had not gone ahead as scheduled: “You know, we were supposed to have a show last night, but we didn’t, because my daughter had a baby last night.”

ABC News identified the baby as Patti Joan. Joan is also the name of Kimmel’s mother. During the broadcast, Kimmel joked that becoming a grandfather was a “big responsibility.” ABC News reported the announcement and family details.
What the 2025 absence does—and does not—mean
The dates matter: Kimmel missed the Monday, May 19, 2025 show and announced the birth on Tuesday, May 20. This is not a report of a new cancellation in October 2026. ABC’s October 2, 2026 schedule announcement listed a Monday, October 5 episode among the week’s planned shows, while noting the lineup could change. The network’s October 2026 program listings also showed episodes and the show’s regular weeknight slot of 11:35 p.m. Eastern/10:35 p.m. Central. These listings establish that episodes were scheduled, not that every later listing aired as planned. ABC Press’s October 2 schedule announcement gives the planned guest lineup.
