How many books did Jimmy Carter write?
Simon & Schuster’s retrospective gives the total as 32 books. Its separate author page describes Carter as the author of “thirty books.” Those are the publisher’s two formulations; they should not be treated as a reconciled, definitive bibliography. The available sources do not establish exactly how coauthored, edited, reissued or posthumous works were counted.
The scale is notable, but the range matters too. Simon & Schuster groups Carter’s work across memoirs, calls to action, fiction, poetry and children’s books. The Associated Press also describes nonfiction, religious meditations and a children’s story. Taken together, his books cover personal history, public affairs and creative writing.
Were Jimmy Carter’s books bestsellers?
Some individual titles have documented bestseller claims; the sources do not support calling all 32 books bestsellers. Simon & Schuster describes A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety as a “major New York Times bestseller.” Carter, writing about Keeping Faith: Memoirs of a President, said it was on a bestseller list for 11 weeks. That duration is Carter’s own account, not an independently audited chart history.

In his Carter Center essay, “From Politics to Poetics,” Carter reflected that “Why Not the Best? and Keeping Faith were written as a matter of duty, to further my political career or for income, but most of my other books have been for my own pleasure.” His account gives a personal perspective on how his reasons for writing changed; it is not a complete guide to the commercial performance of his books.

The most defensible takeaway is that Simon & Schuster’s retrospective counts 32 Carter books, while its author page says “thirty,” and that specific books—not the whole body of work—have documented bestseller claims. Carter’s publishing legacy is best understood through both its volume and its variety: memoir, public affairs, faith, fiction, poetry and writing for children.
