Jim Carrey’s much-repeated “nearly nine-hour” Grinch makeup session was his first day in the chair—not the daily routine. Carrey later recalled that it took eight hours and left him ready to quit. Makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji, describing the regular process in 2000, put the makeup application at about two hours and ten minutes on an average day. The harder part was living in the makeup and costume through long shooting days, with painful eye irritation and frequent touch-ups.
How long did the Grinch makeup take?
The figures refer to different situations, not competing estimates of the same daily session. In a 2025 ABC News report on Carrey’s Vulture interview, Carrey said his first day in makeup took eight hours. In a contemporary 2000 Los Angeles Times production feature, Tsuji estimated that applying the makeup itself took about two hours and ten minutes on an average day. A January 2001 Fox News report put Carrey’s daily chair time at about two and a half hours.
| Figure | What it describes | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Eight hours | Carrey’s first day in makeup | Carrey, as reported by ABC News, Dec. 14, 2025 |
| About two hours and ten minutes | Average daily makeup application, according to Tsuji | Los Angeles Times, Nov. 12, 2000 |
| About two and a half hours | Carrey’s reported daily time in the makeup chair | Fox News, Jan. 22, 2001 |
The eight-hour first day was a distinct ordeal; it should not be taken as the standard daily application time. Nor does the shorter application estimate describe the whole burden of wearing the character: Tsuji said application was less than half of his daily work on the makeup.
What happened after the makeup was applied?
Foam pieces, color and hair
Tsuji described three main stages: applying foam-rubber face pieces, adding color, and fitting the hairpieces and wig. He said the stages included breaks of 10 to 30 minutes. That sequence helps explain why a single figure for “makeup time” does not capture the entire process.

Touch-ups through the shoot
Movement and sweating could affect the makeup, Tsuji said, so Carrey needed frequent on-set touch-ups. Tsuji recalled that Carrey had worn the makeup for 92 shooting days by the last day of filming. This was therefore not just a long morning in the chair: the look also had to be maintained during production.
The production operation was large. Rick Baker told Fox News in 2001 that 60 makeup artists and 30 stylists worked each day, and that 91 cast members wore appliance makeup each day over five months. Those are Baker’s reported production figures, not independently audited counts.

Why was wearing the Grinch look so difficult?
Debris around the contact lenses
Tsuji told the Los Angeles Times that the fake snow on set was made from dried, smashed paper pulp. Tiny particles could get between Carrey’s contact lenses and eyes, causing pain. The account describes irritation from debris; it does not establish a separate medical diagnosis.
The costume and long days
In a November 2000 CBS interview, Carrey compared performing in the outfit to “performing with a fridge on your back.” The makeup and costume were physical constraints he had to work through while filming, rather than something the initial chair session could resolve.

Why did Carrey say he nearly quit?
In the later account summarized by ABC News from Carrey’s Vulture interview, he said that after the eight-hour first session he told director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer he could not do the movie. He recalled offering to return his pay: “I will give all my money back. I’ll pay interest. But I quit.”
ABC News reported that Grazer found a specialist who trained CIA officers to endure torture. Carrey said the specialist gave him coping tactics to use when he began to spiral. This is Carrey’s retrospective account of how he dealt with the experience, not evidence that every difficult day followed the same pattern.

What helped Carrey find the character?
Carrey’s account of the role was not only about enduring its physical demands. In a 2000 CBS interview, he said he came to understand that the Grinch’s anger covered hurt and exclusion. As Carrey put it: “Hey, I’m not angry. I’m hurt.” He described the character’s hostility as a protective callous—a way to play the anger as a response to pain, rather than as anger alone.
