Aniston said she enjoyed the role because Julia was raunchy, outrageous and behaved like the kind of character usually written for a man. “Man eater” is a promotional shorthand; the film’s joke also depends on the harassment and the power imbalance between boss and employee.
What Jennifer Aniston said about the role
In a July 8, 2011 interview with Gill Pringle for The Independent, Aniston said, “I’ve never played a character so inexcusably raunchy and there was no way I could resist it.” She described the dialogue and situations as outrageous and fun, and said that she imagined Julia as a woman behaving like a male character: “I thought of her as kind of like a guy and that made it that much more fun.” Read the interview in The Independent.
Aniston also told Pringle she felt unusually comfortable filming the provocative material; she and Charlie Day were in a scene together within 20 minutes of meeting on set. These were comments made during the film’s 2011 press tour, not a recent retrospective.
Who is Dr. Julia Harris?
Julia is Dale’s dentist boss. Dale, played by Charlie Day, is a dental hygienist who is engaged, and Julia repeatedly pursues him. A contemporaneous Los Angeles Times profile describes her advances as unwanted and makes clear that Dale’s predicament is part of the conflict, not simply a mutual flirtation. The film follows Dale and his friends Nick (Jason Bateman) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis), who are unhappy with their bosses. Their bosses include Julia, played by Aniston, and characters portrayed by Kevin Spacey and Colin Farrell. Julia’s sexual confidence supplies the comic characterization, but Dale’s lack of consent and his dependence on his employer are why her behavior is a problem within the story.
Why the film calls her a predator
Director Seth Gordon used predator imagery in promotional comments. A Warner Bros. press statement reproduced by PEP.ph quotes him calling Julia “a predator, like a lion.” In the Los Angeles Times, Gordon explained the dramatic stakes this way: “The guy had to plausibly be so smitten with his fiancée that you believe that Dr. Julia’s advances are a problem.” The first description is promotional characterization; the second explains how the unwanted pursuit functions in the plot. A reported change to Julia’s look
Pringle’s Independent interview reported that Aniston chose a dark-brown look for Julia after studio hesitation, and quoted Gordon saying the aim was to give her a look audiences had not seen from her. This is an anecdote reported in the 2011 interview, rather than a claim supported here by studio documentation.
