Why Jamie Lee Curtis appealed to Zuckerberg
Curtis said she had already tried Meta’s ordinary reporting and contact channels but had not obtained the removal of what she described as a completely fake commercial. She then posted a public message on Instagram tagging Zuckerberg, alongside screenshots of the alleged advertisement and her attempts to seek help.
In her account, the central problem was not simply that artificial intelligence had been used. The ad allegedly put fabricated words in her mouth and presented them as a real product recommendation—one she said she had never authorized or made.

What the alleged AI commercial showed
Reports said the video drew on real footage of Curtis from an interview with MSNBC journalist Stephanie Ruhle during coverage of the devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area. The manipulated material retained Curtis’s recognizable appearance while altering or adding her words.
At least one report identified the apparent product as a dental product. The available reporting does not establish who created the ad, which advertiser was behind it, how widely it ran, how much was spent on it, or how long the campaign had been active.
That distinction matters: the reported footage was not described as an entirely synthetic video generated from nothing. Rather, real interview material appears to have been manipulated to create a fabricated endorsement.
Meta removed the ads—but the record does not show Zuckerberg personally ordered it
Reports said Meta removed the advertisements shortly after Curtis made her public appeal. Curtis later wrote that the appeal had worked, thanked the people who helped, and remarked that public shame had been effective in obtaining a remedy.

The known chronology supports a careful conclusion: Curtis appealed publicly to Zuckerberg, and Meta subsequently removed the ads. It does not establish that Zuckerberg personally reviewed the material or directed the takedown. Why a fabricated celebrity endorsement is a serious advertising issue
A fake celebrity testimonial can be more deceptive than an ordinary misleading image because it appears to borrow the person’s opinions, experience, and credibility. Consumers may reasonably understand a celebrity endorsement as evidence that the celebrity actually used, approved, or recommended a product.
Federal Trade Commission guidance says advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive, and that advertisers need support for express and implied claims communicated through an ad. FTC guidance concerning artificial intelligence also addresses the risk of using a celebrity avatar or likeness without permission to speak favorably about a product when reasonable consumers would think the celebrity gave the testimonial.
That principle applies to more than a digitally generated face. A campaign can create the same misleading impression by editing authentic interview footage, cloning or altering a voice, or combining real images with invented statements. A disclaimer placed somewhere outside the video would not automatically cure an advertisement that is designed to make viewers believe a person said something they did not say.

The performer-consent question
SAG-AFTRA’s materials offer a broader performer-rights framework, not a ruling on Curtis’s specific incident. The union describes a digital replica as a digitally created replica of a performer’s voice or likeness and emphasizes informed consent and compensation protections.
Its commercial-AI guidance says clear consent and specific notice are required for generating or using a performer’s digital replica in covered commercial work, including circumstances in which existing material is used to create the replica. Whether those protections apply to a particular dispute depends on the work, contracts, parties, and governing law. They nevertheless illustrate why commercial use of a performer’s identity cannot be treated as an automatic byproduct of publicly available footage.
What remains unknown
- The identity of the advertiser or the person or organization that made the ad.
- The campaign’s reach, spending, duration, and distribution.
- Whether the advertiser obtained or claimed to have obtained any permission.
- Whether Curtis pursued litigation or another legal remedy after the reported removal.
- Whether Zuckerberg personally saw the ad or participated in the decision to remove it.
Those unanswered questions should not be filled with speculation. Removing an ad from a platform is not the same thing as a court deciding that a specific party violated the law.
What the episode shows about reporting AI impersonation
Curtis’s experience highlights a practical problem for people whose likenesses are misused: the ordinary reporting process may not produce a visible or timely response, while a public escalation can attract attention more quickly. That does not prove that public pressure is the only effective remedy, or establish how Meta handles synthetic impersonation cases generally. It does show why a clear reporting trail can matter.

Someone confronting a suspected fake endorsement should preserve the ad’s URL, screenshots, account name, timestamps, captions, and any apparent product or advertiser information before reporting it. They should describe precisely what is false—such as altered speech, unauthorized use of a likeness, or a fabricated product claim—and retain confirmation numbers or copies of platform correspondence. Those steps document the complaint without requiring the person to decide in advance whether the conduct is legally actionable.

The Curtis incident is an unusually visible example of a wider problem: familiar footage can be repurposed into an apparently authentic commercial message without the subject’s permission. For viewers, the presence of a recognizable face is not proof of an endorsement. For advertisers, using synthetic or manipulated identity in a commercial raises both deception concerns and performer-consent questions.
