Pruitt Taylor Vince plays Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent’s adoptive Earth father, in James Gunn’s Superman (2025). He is not Jor-El, Superman’s Kryptonian biological father. The casting was reported on April 17, 2024, and DC later confirmed Vince’s character in its official film materials.
Who plays Superman’s dad in James Gunn’s film?
Pruitt Taylor Vince plays Jonathan Kent, the Kansas farmer who raises Clark on Earth. TheWrap’s April 17, 2024 casting report identified Vince for the role; DC’s later official cast listing includes him, and DC’s May 14, 2025 trailer analysis explicitly identifies him as Jonathan Kent.
The original headline’s “Daddy” is an informal reference to Jonathan, often called Pa Kent—not to Jor-El, who is tied to Superman’s Kryptonian origins. The distinction matters because the film’s premise places Clark’s human upbringing alongside his Kryptonian heritage.
Why Jonathan Kent matters to this Superman
DC’s initial project announcement described Superman’s journey as reconciling his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. Jonathan represents that human side of Clark’s life; the available official material establishes the family connection without detailing how large Vince’s role is in the finished film.

In the May 2025 trailer analysis, DC attributes this line to Jonathan speaking to Clark: “Your choices, your actions, that’s what makes you who you are.” It underscores the film’s focus on how Clark’s decisions and upbringing shape his identity, rather than defining him only by where he came from.
What film is Vince appearing in?
Superman was written and directed by James Gunn. DC lists the film’s U.S. theatrical and IMAX release date as July 11, 2025—a date that has passed. The casting report appeared while the film was still in production and scheduled for release; DC’s later film page and trailer coverage provide the subsequent confirmation of Vince’s casting and character.
