The Man Who Ate a Succulent Chinese Meal is a feature documentary about Jack Karlson, the man remembered as “Mr. Democracy Manifest” after footage of his 1991 arrest outside a Brisbane Chinese restaurant became an enduring internet meme. Screen Australia lists the film as a 90-minute feature with a 2026 completion year and a current status of “Post-Production.” No confirmed public release date or viewing platform is listed.

What is the Jack Karlson documentary about?

The Man Who Ate a Succulent Chinese Meal follows Karlson’s life before and after the arrest that made him widely recognizable online. The film was announced in 2024 as a story about the man behind the footage, rather than simply a retelling of the arrest. PerthNow’s June 19, 2024 announcement quoted director Heath Davis describing the project’s changing tone: “We started out filming a comedy but what’s quickly becoming apparent is this is a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions.” Davis also said at the time, “People are going to be blown away. One thing is for sure: there will be plenty of laughs and tears.” These were production-era comments, not a review of a finished film.

Screen Australia’s project listing identifies the film as a 90-minute feature documentary. It names Heath Davis as writer/director and Timothy Randall, Johnathan Page and Ruth Harrison as producers.

What happened in the arrest footage?

The footage shows Queensland police detaining Karlson outside the China Sea Restaurant in Brisbane in 1991. During the encounter, he protested with lines including “Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest” and “What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?” The exchange also produced the phrase “Get your hand off my penis,” now closely associated with the clip and its online afterlife.

The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia identifies the source as a Seven Nightly News item dated October 11, 1991. Its account traces how the footage later circulated online and entered popular culture through music, advertising, merchandise and performance.

Some details of the arrest should be treated as reported accounts, not as settled findings. In its obituary, 7NEWS reported that accounts at the time suggested Karlson had been mistaken for a wanted man and was the wrong person; Karlson himself maintained that he was wrongly identified.

Is the documentary out yet?

No public release date or viewing platform is confirmed by the available official production and distribution information. Screen Australia lists the film as “Post-Production” and gives 2026 as its completion year. That completion year is not, by itself, a release date.

Documentary Australia’s project page includes a November 2, 2025 update saying the film was in post-production and being edited. Screen Australia’s 2026 funding announcement says the production received principal production funding in association with Screen NSW and names Bonsai Films as local distributor. Neither listing confirms a public screening schedule or streaming service.

Jack Karlson’s death and the clip’s legacy

Karlson died in August 2024, aged 82, according to 7NEWS. The documentary’s subject therefore extends beyond the arrest footage: it is also a portrait of the person whose brief, theatrical exchange with police became a lasting cultural reference.
