Actor Rudy Mancuso says the choice comes from a bond that has grown beyond friendship: Pauly trusts Leroy like a brother, even when he cannot see what Leroy sees.
Why does Pauly save Leroy’s son?
In Episode 5, Leroy is disoriented by Pennywise’s transformations in the tunnels and points his weapon at Will. Pauly recognizes that Will is real and moves between them. The act saves Will and costs Pauly his life, according to TV Insider’s November 24, 2025 interview with Mancuso.
Mancuso interprets Pauly’s decision through the closeness of the two men. Their relationship, he says, has moved past friendship toward brotherhood. Pauly has few people who matter deeply to him, and Leroy is one of them. Even before Pauly can see the apparitions, he trusts Leroy’s account of what is happening. Once he recognizes the danger himself, he acts to stop it.
“Wait a minute, if my partner is seeing things that I can’t, and I am seeing this thing, it must be real.”

That line captures Mancuso’s reading of Pauly’s reasoning: he relies on Leroy’s perspective, then responds when the threat becomes clear to him. It is the actor’s interpretation of Pauly’s motive, rather than a separate statement of intent from the character.
What is the final image of Pauly meant to show?
After Pauly’s death, Dick Hallorann sees him in ghost form. The closing image connects the immediate loss in the tunnels with Hallorann’s vision, while also showing Pauly in the makeup and costume used for the scene.

Mancuso told TV Insider that the practical effects were physically uncomfortable. Contacts impaired his vision, and the heavy costume added to the disorientation while he was placed in the woods. He said Pauly’s expression of confusion and despair reflected both the character’s state and his own experience of restricted sight and the costume. Seeing the finished moment in the episode, he said, was rewarding.

Episode 5 also marks Pennywise’s first appearance in familiar clown form after a run of other incarnations. In a TV Insider aftershow report published November 23, 2025, director Andy Muschietti said the introduction was deliberately delayed. Barbara Muschietti compared Pennywise to a shark and described the creators’ approach as strategic about when he appears. That is the creators’ account of the staging, not a universal rule about how audiences respond to the character.
