Pennywise tells her that Richie and his friends will eventually kill him. The finale also connects the series to the films through a 1988 scene featuring Beverly Marsh and Ingrid Kersh.
How the finale confirms Marge is Richie’s mother
In “Winter Fire,” Pennywise identifies Marge’s future son as Richie and tells her that Richie and his friends will kill him. That makes the connection part of the show’s on-screen story—not just a fan theory based on a resemblance or a suggestive name.
The reveal has been planned from the start, according to the creators. Executive producer Andy Muschietti said that the idea of a character who would become Richie’s mother was his first idea for the series. Co-showrunner Jason Fuchs described the goal as revealing the connection gradually rather than giving Marge a conspicuous last name that would disclose it early. He also said the writers wanted Marge’s relationship with Rich Santos to give emotional meaning to Richie’s name. The finale establishes the family connection, though it does not explain every aspect of Richie’s later life. TVLine’s creator interview and GamesRadar+’s finale interview discuss how the reveal was conceived.
How Beverly and Ingrid Kersh connect the series to the films
A closing coda jumps to 1988, shortly before the events of the first film, which is set in 1989. At Juniper Hill, Beverly Marsh is there after her mother, Elfrida, has died. She encounters an older Ingrid Kersh.

Ingrid’s appearance links the series to the Mrs. Kersh material in It: Chapter Two, while Beverly’s presence places a familiar film character in the prequel’s timeline. It is a separate continuity bridge from the Marge-to-Richie reveal: the finale uses both to connect Derry’s past to the movie story. TIME’s finale account and TV Guide’s interview with the producer describe the coda.
Does Pennywise travel through time?
The finale establishes that Pennywise experiences time non-linearly. That unusual perception explains how he can speak to Marge about events involving her future son. Muschietti put the premise plainly: “The only reason the series exists is because this monster has a different perception of time.” TV Insider’s interview covers the creators’ explanation.

But the episode does not prove that Pennywise can physically travel into the past or successfully change history. Marge wonders whether he could go back to target ancestors; Lilly’s response leaves that possibility as a problem for someone else to face. Muschietti said the exchange plants seeds for a possible future season, not that it confirms a particular time-travel rule or outcome. For now, the distinction is important: non-linear perception is stated; altering the past remains an open question.
What the reveal means for the planned Derry story
The creators described a three-season framework moving backward through major Derry catastrophes: the 1962 Black Spot fire, a planned 1935 Bradley Gang massacre, and a planned 1908 Easter egg hunt explosion. These are the settings in the creators’ intended cycle, not proof that all three seasons have been ordered.

As of GamesRadar+’s August 17, 2026 update, HBO had announced season two for 1935, but no premiere date had been announced in that report. The immediate next setting therefore follows the creators’ plan; the 1908 season remains part of the stated framework, not a confirmed order. GamesRadar+’s season-two update reports the announcement and date status.

The finale also points toward Dick Hallorann’s future as a hotel chef, a nod for viewers who know The Shining and Doctor Sleep. It is an additional Stephen King universe reference, but the central movie connections are Marge’s future as Richie’s mother and the Juniper Hill coda with Beverly and Ingrid.
