Hurry Up Tomorrow is a fictionalized, music-driven psychological drama—not a straightforward Weeknd biopic. Its pulsing sound and disorienting images can make it feel vivid moment to moment, but they do not consistently add up to a compelling feature-length drama. The comparison with Purple Rain works as a provocation about pop stardom on screen, not as a claim that the films are equivalent.
What is Hurry Up Tomorrow about?
Directed by Trey Edward Shults and starring Abel Tesfaye, who performs as The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan, the 2025 film follows a musician plagued by insomnia and drawn into an odyssey with a stranger that unsettles his sense of self. That is the premise given in the official trailer.
Tesfaye’s character is a fictionalized version of the artist, rather than a documentary portrait or conventional account of his life. The film is also a companion piece to Tesfaye’s album of the same name, as the Associated Press review describes it. That connection helps explain why the movie often behaves like an extension of a musical world rather than a biopic built around career milestones.
Does the music and visual style deepen the story?
The film’s strongest asset is its audiovisual intensity. Music and image are not decorative extras: they shape the uneasy, dreamlike atmosphere and make the protagonist’s troubled state feel immediate. The score gives the film a strong sensory identity, and viewers drawn to The Weeknd’s music may find the visual world an appealing extension of it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
But the same approach can leave scenes feeling more like striking set pieces than parts of a steadily developing drama. The Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus praises the woozy visuals and chart-topping soundtrack while finding little else to recommend. The AP review likewise argues that Shults’s visual approach is better suited to a music video than a feature film, while identifying the score as a strength. Those are critical judgments, not a consensus measurement of what every viewer will experience; they do capture the film’s central tension.
Does the fictional pop star become a compelling character?
Tesfaye’s performance and the character’s resemblance to his public persona are part of the film’s design. That resemblance gives the story an immediate layer of self-reference: the musician on screen is close enough to the real artist to invite viewers to read the film through his fame, image and music.

That layer does not always become deeper characterization. The dramatic question is whether the fictionalized star develops beyond the audience’s recognition of The Weeknd. For viewers hoping for a sharply observed portrait of a person changing under pressure, the film’s stylized presentation may offer less emotional grounding than its premise promises. Ortega and Keoghan share the screen with Tesfaye, but the central experience remains tied to his performance and the film’s deliberately unstable point of view.
Can you follow it without knowing the album or The Weeknd’s career?
The official premise is legible on its own: an insomniac musician encounters a stranger and is pulled into an unsettling journey. Familiarity with the album or Tesfaye’s career is not required to understand that setup. It can, however, make the film’s self-referential elements and musical material more resonant.

For a viewer who is not a Weeknd fan, the deciding factor is likely tolerance for mood and spectacle in place of conventional dramatic momentum. The movie has an identifiable story premise, but its surreal shifts may feel more evocative than explanatory. If you want an accessible character drama first, the film may frustrate; if you are open to an ambitious, music-centered experience whose coherence is part of the question, it has more to offer.
Is it really comparable to Purple Rain?
The title’s comparison is useful as a question about what a pop star’s music and screen persona can accomplish in a film. It should not be taken to mean that Hurry Up Tomorrow and Purple Rain are formally equivalent. Shults’s film is a psychological, surreal drama tied to a contemporary album; its central gamble is whether its sensory world can carry the weight of its character story.
