Spoilers for season 1, episode 7. “The Black Spot,” the penultimate episode of IT: Welcome to Derry, gives Pennywise’s clown identity a fuller backstory: in the series’ version, Bob Gray is Ingrid Kersh’s father, and Ingrid helps draw It to the Black Spot because she believes the clown is her long-lost dad. The episode also makes an important distinction: people carry out the attack; It is drawn to the suffering it creates.
What happens in “The Black Spot”?
The episode adapts the Black Spot interlude from Stephen King’s IT and turns the gathering into a refuge that is destroyed in a racist attack. White nationalists target the Black Spot while pursuing Hank Grogan, and the assault becomes a mass killing. Dick Hallorann saves Hank and Ronnie. Rich gets Marge into a cooler to protect her, then stays outside.
The official episode podcast calls “The Black Spot” the season’s penultimate chapter and highlights both the club’s fall and Pennywise’s origin story. It also notes the contrast between Bob Gray’s carnivalesque tragedy and the Black Spot’s brief sense of safety.
Who was Bob Gray?
Bob Gray is the name associated with the clown identity behind Pennywise. Director and executive producer Andy Muschietti says King’s novel gives little personal history for him: “It’s such a cryptic character that we don’t really know who he was.” The series builds beyond those limited clues. As Muschietti puts it, “We had to create Bob Gray for this story, and that’s what we did.”

In the show’s account, Bob Gray is Ingrid Kersh’s father. Ingrid is deceived into believing that the entity appearing as the clown is her long-dead dad. Trying to summon him, she gives Clint Bowers Hank’s location, helping set the attack in motion.
Does Ingrid cause the Black Spot attack?
Ingrid’s actions help create the conditions that bring It to the Black Spot, but the episode’s creators distinguish that from responsibility for the human atrocity. The white nationalists initiate the attack. Muschietti describes It as taking advantage of nefarious events it did not necessarily create, drawn to the concentrated fear and pain.

That distinction matters to the origin story: Ingrid believes she is calling her father, but the clown is not simply a dead man returning. The series presents her belief as part of It’s deception and shows the creature exploiting violence committed by people.
How does the episode differ from King’s novel?
The episode adapts a major landmark from the novel, but the creator interview supports a few specific comparisons—not a claim that these are every difference between book and screen.
