Calling it the most devastating moment in the It franchise is a matter of opinion, but the episode gives that judgment a powerful emotional case.
What happens to Rich in “The Black Spot”
A racially motivated mob attacks the Black Spot, trapping Black residents as the building burns. In the chaos, Rich acts to save Marge. He does not survive the fire. An episode recap describes his death as a sacrifice that allows Marge to live.
The emotional force comes from the cost of his choice: a young character protects someone he cares about amid violence set in motion by other people. The scene’s tragedy is not simply that Rich dies; it is that his act of courage cannot undo the cruelty around him.
Why the scene’s horror is more than Pennywise
The attack makes human violence central to the episode’s horror. In its account of the sequence, Fisher emphasizes the racist violence directed at the Black Spot’s residents alongside the supernatural threat associated with Pennywise. That contrast gives Rich’s sacrifice its context: he is trying to save Marge during a disaster created by a mob, not merely escaping a monster.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That framing also helps explain why viewers may rank the scene so highly within the franchise. Its devastation rests on a character’s loss and on the human brutality surrounding it—not on a claim that can be objectively measured against every other moment in It.
The Black Spot’s place in the It story
The Black Spot fire is connected to Stephen King’s novel It. TV Obsessive calls it a defining event in Derry’s history and notes that it is referenced in the novel and films. Screen Realm reports that director and executive producer Andy Muschietti said the series was built around the event from the book. Those connections establish the source-material background, but they do not by themselves support a detailed scene-by-scene comparison of the novel and each screen adaptation.

How the episode’s creators describe the sequence
In a December 9, 2025 report, Screen Realm attributed comments about the scene to participants in an HBO episode featurette. Muschietti described the Black Spot as an “augury,” saying, “Every beginning of It’s cycle starts and ends with a big episode of violence. We call them auguries, and the Black Spot is one of them.” He also said, “We started with the Black Spot as one of the most horrific events in the book, and we built a story around it.”
On the scene’s staging, Muschietti said the team wanted “to create the impression that things were happening in real time with a single camera move,” adding, “It was not easy to shoot.” Matilda Lawler, who plays Marge, described filming it as “the most painful scene I think I’ve ever filmed,” and added, “I love Rich so much.” These quotations are reported by Screen Realm as statements from the featurette.

What makes “most devastating” a judgment, not a fact
Rich’s death is a clear candidate for one of Welcome to Derry’s most heartbreaking moments: he saves Marge and dies during an attack on the Black Spot. Whether it is the most devastating moment in the whole franchise depends on what a viewer weighs—character attachment, the circumstances of the loss, or the surrounding human violence. The episode supplies the story; the ranking belongs to the audience.
For a comparison with the book or other adaptations, useful questions are how each version depicts the attack and fire, how it balances racist human violence with supernatural horror, and what Rich’s choice changes for Marge and the other characters. The available accounts establish the Black Spot’s connection to the source material, but do not settle those comparisons in detail.
