Yes. John Lithgow is officially cast as Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter series. He said he had accepted the role in February 2025, before HBO had publicly confirmed the deal; the official franchise announcement later named him among six Hogwarts staff cast members. Lithgow described the decision as difficult, then added: “But I’m very excited.”
When was John Lithgow confirmed as Dumbledore?
The news came in two stages. In a February 2025 interview with ABC’s Good Morning America, Lithgow said he had accepted the role. At the time, HBO had not publicly confirmed the deal and said it would confirm details as agreements were finalized. Later, the official Wizarding World cast announcement listed Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore.
Lithgow said the choice was not easy because the role could define the last chapter of his life. He estimated that he would be about 87 at the wrap party, a personal estimate rather than a confirmed production schedule. He concluded, “But I’m very excited.”
Who else is playing Hogwarts staff?

What is the series called, and when will it premiere?
The official franchise update dated 1 September 2026 says the first season will be titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The same update describes the series as coming “this Christmas” to HBO Max. However, the Associated Press reported in 2026 that production had begun at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and that the series was expected to debut in 2027. Those dates conflict, so neither should be treated as a settled premiere date without a newer definitive announcement.

Richard Harris played Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films; Michael Gambon took over the role in the later films. Jude Law portrayed a younger Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts films. Lithgow is the newly announced Dumbledore for the television adaptation, not a continuation of those film performances.
