The original series ended after five seasons on December 15, 2024—but Paramount continued the Dutton story with Dutton Ranch, a separate series focused on Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.
The short answer: no, not as Yellowstone Season 6
Yellowstone Season 6 is not happening under that title. The original series ended with its fifth season on December 15, 2024, and there is no official sixth-season renewal or release plan in Paramount’s current materials. [C001][C005][C006]
However, the Dutton story did not end with the flagship show. Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler return in Dutton Ranch, a separate nine-episode series that continues their story after Yellowstone. It is best understood as the franchise’s modern-day follow-up—not as a renamed sixth season. [C002][C003]
What happened to the original Yellowstone series?
Yellowstone premiered on Paramount Network in 2018 and followed John Dutton and his family as they fought to protect their Montana ranch from developers, politicians, neighboring ranchers, and conflicts involving the nearby reservation. Kevin Costner’s John Dutton was the central patriarch of the family-and-ranch drama. [C005]

The show’s fifth season was divided into two parts. The second half began airing on November 10, 2024, and the final episode aired on December 15, 2024. That episode was presented as both the fifth-season finale and the series finale. [C001][C006]
The conclusion was closely connected to Kevin Costner’s departure from the series. Once the show could no longer continue in its original form with John Dutton at its center, Paramount and creator Taylor Sheridan moved toward a different continuation rather than producing a conventional sixth season with the same title and ensemble. [C007][C008]
That distinction explains much of the confusion: reports about extending the Dutton story were not the same as an official renewal of Yellowstone Season 6.
Why did fans think Season 6 might happen?
Several developments made a sixth season seem possible even though Paramount never formally announced one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The franchise continued expanding. Paramount developed prequels, sequels, and character-focused projects, so news about one Dutton production was easily mistaken for news about the original show. [C009][C010]
- Beth and Rip survived. Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler remained among the franchise’s most popular characters and were natural candidates to carry the modern-day story forward.
- Early reports used flexible descriptions. Entertainment and trade coverage discussed possible franchise extensions using terms such as sequel, continuation, or an informal “Season 6” concept. Those reports reflected development discussions, not a confirmed order for the original series. [C008]
- The new show follows the existing continuity. Because Dutton Ranch begins after the events of Yellowstone and retains Beth and Rip, it can feel like the next season even though it has a new title, format, setting, and creative identity. [C002][C003]
- Paramount marketed the projects as part of one universe. Marathons, character features, franchise promotions, and publicity for the Beth-and-Rip series kept the Yellowstone brand in front of viewers. The official branding nevertheless identifies Dutton Ranch as a new original series. [C004][C011]
What is Dutton Ranch?
Dutton Ranch is the official modern-day continuation most likely to be confused with Yellowstone Season 6. Paramount says the series premiered globally on Paramount+ and Paramount Network on May 15, 2026. Its launch included two episodes, followed by weekly releases, for a first season of nine episodes. The story follows Beth and Rip after they leave Montana and try to build a future on their own ranch in South Texas. Paramount describes the ranch as Rio Paloma and places the couple in conflict with a rival ranching family and other threats. [C002]
The series also continues the story of Carter, played by Finn Little. Paramount’s description presents Beth, Rip, and Carter as a formal family unit—an important development from their Yellowstone relationship. [C002]

In story terms, it is a continuation. In official terms, it is not Season 6.
It is reasonable for viewers to call Dutton Ranch “Season 6” as informal shorthand when they mean “the next chapter after Yellowstone.” But using that label as though it were the official title is inaccurate. Paramount presents the program as a new series with a nine-episode first season, not as Season 6 of the original show. [C002][C003]

The clearest wording is: There is no Yellowstone Season 6, but Beth and Rip’s story continues in the separate series Dutton Ranch.
That wording also avoids another common mistake: Kevin Costner is not identified in the confirmed Dutton Ranch materials as returning as John Dutton. The announced leads are Reilly and Hauser. [C002]

John Dutton’s story belongs to the original five-season series. Costner’s departure was one of the central production developments behind the decision to move away from a conventional sixth season. The new continuation is built around Beth and Rip rather than presenting John Dutton as the lead character.
Readers should therefore be cautious with headlines suggesting that Costner is returning for Dutton Ranch or that the new series is simply Yellowstone with a different name. The available official information supports neither claim. [C002][C007]
Other Yellowstone projects are not Season 6
The Dutton universe contains several series and proposed projects. Their existence does not change the status of the original show.

What should viewers watch next?
The right choice depends on which part of the franchise interests you most:
| If you want… | Watch or follow… |
|---|---|
| The complete John Dutton story | The five seasons of Yellowstone; the original series is complete. |
| More Beth and Rip | Dutton Ranch, the nine-episode modern-day continuation. |
| More Kayce | Marshals, not a sixth season of Yellowstone. [C012] |
| The family’s earlier history | 1883 and 1923. |
| A physical rewatch of the original | The Yellowstone complete series DVD, with a Blu-ray edition also reported as available. [C015] |
Paramount identifies Dutton Ranch as available through Paramount+ and Paramount Network in its stated rollout, but streaming rights and platform availability can differ by country, territory, subscription, and broadcast schedule. Check the current listings where you live before subscribing. [C002]

Paramount Shop lists official Yellowstone merchandise, including hats, shirts, drinkware, blankets, collectibles, and other branded items. A Dutton Ranch hat or a Beth-and-Rip collectible may appeal to viewers who want merchandise tied to the newer continuation, but inventory and regional availability can change. [C016]
Does the franchise’s success mean Season 6 could still happen?
Paramount reported that Dutton Ranch reached 12.9 million global viewers during its first seven days on Paramount+ and that its two-episode Paramount Network premiere drew 2.9 million viewers on premiere night. Those figures indicate strong commercial momentum for the wider Dutton franchise. [C003]
They do not, however, prove that Paramount will revive the original Yellowstone series. A successful spinoff can encourage more Dutton projects without changing the status of the completed flagship show. Unless Paramount specifically announces a sixth season of Yellowstone, the accurate answer remains that the original series ended after five seasons.
Bottom line
Yellowstone Season 6 is not happening as an official sixth season of the original series. The flagship drama ended on December 15, 2024, after five seasons. The Dutton universe is still active, but the continuation viewers are looking for is Dutton Ranch: a separate nine-episode series about Beth and Rip in South Texas. [C001][C002][C003]
So, if you are waiting for new episodes under the Yellowstone title, do not expect Season 6. If you want to know what happens to Beth and Rip next, start with Dutton Ranch instead.
