The mix-up came immediately after Cher accepted the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. After her acceptance remarks, she began moving away from the microphone instead of introducing the Record of the Year nominees.
Host Trevor Noah called her back so the presentation could continue. Cher then seemed uncertain about the sequence, explaining that she had been told the winner would appear on the teleprompter. After opening the envelope, she announced “Luther Vandross.”

The mistake was corrected almost immediately: the winner was Kendrick Lamar and SZA for “luther.” The Recording Academy’s official results list the award under that contemporary recording, not under Vandross’s name.
Why Cher said “Luther Vandross”
The error was understandable in context because “luther” is directly connected to Luther Vandross. Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s song samples “If This World Were Mine,” the 1982 duet by Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn. The title “luther” therefore points to the singer whose voice and composition helped shape the record, even though Vandross was not the artist receiving the 2026 award.
The connection was also central to the winners’ remarks. Producer Sounwave called for a tribute to the late Vandross, while Lamar described Vandross as one of his favorite artists and discussed the process of clearing the sample. Lamar said the Vandross and Cheryl Lynn estates required the new song to contain no cursing.
That background turned Cher’s mistake into more than a random name substitution. She read the title as if it were the name of a performer, but the title itself was a deliberate reference to the sampled artist.

Who actually won Record of the Year?
Record of the Year recognizes the overall achievement of a recording. The honor can encompass the performing artists as well as important production, engineering, and other recording contributors. In 2026, the award went to Kendrick Lamar and SZA for luther.

“If This World Were Mine,” the Vandross and Cheryl Lynn recording sampled in “luther,” has also received renewed recognition. The Recording Academy included it among the recordings honored in the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame selections.
