No—Tumblr is not shutting down. As of the research cutoff on August 12, 2026, Tumblr’s official ecosystem is still active, with recent Staff posts, product updates, safety notices, feature fixes, Premium promotion, and maintained help documentation.
The shutdown people may be remembering was NewTumbl, a separate Tumblr-like service that closed in June 2023. The “exodus” connected to Newgrounds was also real—but it was primarily the documented creator migration that followed Tumblr’s adult-content policy change in late 2018, not evidence of a newly measured mass departure in 2026.
Three different stories are being blended together
The rumor becomes much easier to understand once the names are separated:
| Service or event | What happened | When |
|---|---|---|
| Tumblr | Still operating. No reviewed official source announces a planned shutdown. | Active as of August 12, 2026 |
| NewTumbl | A separate blogging platform created after Tumblr’s 2018 adult-content policy change. It later closed. | Shutdown reported around June 7, 2023 |
| Newgrounds | Received a significant wave of artists and traffic during the Tumblr policy controversy. | Especially November–December 2018 |
NewTumbl was not a renamed Tumblr, a Tumblr division, or proof that Tumblr itself was about to disappear. It was a different service with a similar name and a different operator.

Tumblr is still operating
The strongest current answer is therefore simple: Tumblr has not announced that it is shutting down. The available evidence points in the opposite direction. Tumblr’s official Staff blog published a community post on February 11, 2026, while Tumblr’s current product and changes documentation recorded January and February updates involving search, account safety, reblogs, Android fixes, and Tumblr Premium.
Tumblr also continues to maintain documentation for communities, mature-content labels, blog exports, and TumblrMart. Those are ordinary operational signals: they show ongoing maintenance, moderation, user support, feature work, and monetization. They do not prove that Tumblr can never close in the future, but they provide no support for the claim that a shutdown is currently underway or officially planned.
The careful wording is: Tumblr is operating as of August 12, 2026. That is more accurate than making either extreme claim—“Tumblr is shutting down” or “Tumblr can never shut down.”
NewTumbl did shut down—but it was a separate platform
NewTumbl emerged in the aftermath of Tumblr’s 2018 policy change. It presented itself as an alternative for people who wanted a Tumblr-like blogging environment after Tumblr restricted adult content.
Contemporary reporting indicates that NewTumbl announced its closure around June 7, 2023, using the message, “It’s been a blast. Thanks for your patronage. We hope you enjoyed your time at newTumbl.” The surviving evidence is primarily a contemporary report reproducing the service’s public social-media announcement; an accessible official NewTumbl shutdown announcement was not located.
That distinction matters because a search result or social-media post about NewTumbl can easily be shortened, misread, or repeated as a story about Tumblr. The names look related, but the closure of NewTumbl says nothing by itself about Tumblr’s current status.

What actually caused the Tumblr-to-Newgrounds migration?
The documented creator exodus dates to Tumblr’s adult-content policy controversy in 2018.
On December 3, 2018, Tumblr announced that adult content would no longer be allowed under its updated Community Guidelines. Enforcement began on December 17. Tumblr’s announcement described prohibited material broadly, including real-life human genitals, female-presenting nipples, and depictions of sex acts. It also described exceptions for some written erotica, political or newsworthy nudity, and artistic nudity.
The change was especially disruptive for artists and communities whose work had relied on Tumblr’s discovery tools, reblogging system, and audience network. Tumblr later clarified that policy-violating posts would be hidden from public view rather than immediately deleted, and that users could appeal some classifications. That distinction did not eliminate the practical effect for creators whose work became difficult to publish, discover, or share.
Tumblr’s current rules are not identical to the December 2018 announcement. Its present mature-content documentation allows some mature material when it is properly labeled, subject to age and platform restrictions. It still prohibits visual depictions of sexually explicit acts, overtly focused genitalia, sexualized minors, and other categories of prohibited material.
Newgrounds’ own history records a real influx
The best evidence for Newgrounds benefiting from Tumblr’s 2018 exodus comes from Newgrounds itself.
In its history of the site, Newgrounds says Tumblr deleted large numbers of artists on November 20, 2018. Newgrounds responded by reminding artists that its Art Portal accepted NSFW art within its rules. According to that retrospective, more than 1,000 new artists were scouted into the Art Portal within a matter of days.

Tumblr’s December 3 policy announcement produced an even larger wave. Newgrounds describes a “second great artist migration,” unusually heavy traffic, and a site crash that required staff to add server capacity. A contemporaneous Newgrounds welcome post also records temporary increases to upload capacity, tag limits, and daily art-upload limits as the site dealt with the influx.
This is strong evidence for the historical claim that Newgrounds gained artists, attention, and traffic from Tumblr’s 2018 policy change. It is not evidence that every Tumblr user left, nor does it establish a current 2026 migration statistic.
Newgrounds remains an active site, as its current home page demonstrates. But the reviewed sources do not provide a present-day user-migration figure tying current Newgrounds growth to a fresh Tumblr exodus. Any article claiming that Newgrounds is now experiencing another measured mass migration would need new, specific evidence.

Newgrounds is not an unmoderated Tumblr replacement
The simplified version of the story is often presented as “Tumblr banned adult content, so artists moved to a site that allows everything.” That is not accurate.

Newgrounds has its own content-rating and moderation framework. Its Art Portal documentation uses four ratings—E, T, M, and A—which can be filtered by users. Adult art is permitted within the platform’s rules, but it remains subject to age restrictions, ratings, safety requirements, and moderation.
Newgrounds’ Art Guidelines prohibit sexualized depictions of minors and other disallowed material. The wider rules also address exploitation, copyright, spam, and related forms of abuse. Content can be removed, and creators must comply with the platform’s requirements.

The meaningful comparison is not “strict platform versus no rules.” It is that Tumblr and Newgrounds offer different publishing environments, audiences, discovery systems, formats, and content policies. Newgrounds was comparatively attractive to many adult-art creators in 2018, but it was never a completely unrestricted replacement.
Why the old story keeps resurfacing
Several facts are easy to combine into a misleading headline:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Tumblr’s 2018 policy change caused a genuine and highly visible creator migration.
- Newgrounds publicly documented benefiting from that migration.
- NewTumbl was created in response to the same controversy and later closed.
- The names “Tumblr” and “NewTumbl” are similar enough to be confused in search results and social posts.
- Tumblr’s current mature-content rules are more nuanced than the original 2018 blanket-ban framing, which makes old summaries even less reliable.
Put together without dates, these facts can sound like a current chain reaction: Tumblr is shutting down, NewTumbl has disappeared, and Newgrounds is receiving a new wave of users. The evidence supports only part of that narrative. NewTumbl did close, and Newgrounds gained from Tumblr’s 2018 exodus. Tumblr, however, is still operating, and no current mass migration has been established by the reviewed evidence.

There is no need to abandon Tumblr because of this rumor. The sensible response depends on what you want from the platform.
If you still want to use Tumblr
Continue using the service while checking the current Community Guidelines and mature-content settings rather than relying on screenshots or explanations from 2018. Platform rules, labels, age restrictions, and enforcement procedures can change independently of the service’s overall availability.
If you want a backup
Backing up valuable work is reasonable digital hygiene even when no shutdown has been announced. Tumblr maintains documentation for exporting a blog. Follow the current instructions in its Help Center, download the resulting archive, and check that the files you care about are present. Keep at least two copies—for example, one on a local drive and one in cloud storage or another separate location.

Readers who want a separate home can also use Tumblr’s documented export and import route to move a Tumblr blog to WordPress.com, or choose another creator-hosting service. That is a preservation and platform-choice decision, not evidence that Tumblr has announced an impending shutdown.
If you are considering Newgrounds
Read the current Art Guidelines first. Check whether your work fits the available ratings, whether your intended audience can access it, and how moderation and discovery work. Newgrounds may be a useful destination for some creators, particularly those interested in its Art Portal, but it is not a mirror of Tumblr’s social graph or reblog culture.
How strong is the evidence?
The evidence is strongest for Tumblr’s current operation and for Newgrounds’ account of the 2018 migration:
- Primary current evidence: Tumblr’s official Staff activity, product updates, safety notices, help documentation, and maintained services.
- Primary historical evidence: Newgrounds’ own history and contemporaneous welcome post describing the artist influx, traffic pressure, crash, and capacity changes. Because Newgrounds is describing its own experience, those figures should be understood as platform-reported rather than an independently audited industry measurement.
- Secondary shutdown evidence: the NewTumbl closure report reproducing a public announcement. An accessible official NewTumbl announcement was not found in the reviewed material.
This evidence supports a precise conclusion, not a dramatic one: Tumblr is still running; NewTumbl was a separate platform that closed; and Newgrounds benefited substantially from the Tumblr creator exodus in late 2018.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NewTumbl the same as Tumblr?
No. NewTumbl was a separate Tumblr-like blogging service created after Tumblr’s 2018 adult-content policy change. Its reported closure in June 2023 does not mean that Tumblr itself closed or announced a shutdown.
Did Tumblr users really move to Newgrounds?
Yes, a substantial 2018 creator migration is documented by Newgrounds. Its own history says more than 1,000 artists were scouted within days of the initial wave, followed by heavier traffic, a crash, added server capacity, and further migration after Tumblr’s December 3 policy announcement. That does not mean every Tumblr user left, and it is not a current 2026 migration statistic.
Does Newgrounds allow all adult content?
No. Newgrounds permits some adult art through its rating and moderation system, but its rules include age, safety, anti-exploitation, copyright, and anti-spam restrictions. Sexualized depictions of minors and other prohibited material are not allowed.
Should I export my Tumblr blog?
If your posts or media matter to you, keeping a backup is sensible regardless of the shutdown rumor. Tumblr documents blog exports, and an archive can give you an additional copy or help you move to another service. A backup is precautionary; it is not a response to an announced Tumblr closure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
Bottom line: Tumblr is not shutting down based on the available evidence as of August 12, 2026. NewTumbl—the separate service—did close in 2023. Newgrounds really did gain a major wave of artists and traffic from Tumblr’s 2018 adult-content policy change, but that historical exodus should not be presented as proof of a new 2026 migration.
