The Bear remained in the comedy categories at the 2024 Emmys. It lost Outstanding Comedy Series to Hacks, but won comedy-category awards for acting and directing. That outcome renewed the debate over the show’s genre; it did not formally reclassify the series or prove that Emmy voters agreed it was not a comedy.
What happened at the 2024 Emmys?
The Bear competed in comedy, earning 23 comedy-category nominations—a record for a single year in the category, according to the Television Academy’s July 2024 announcement. The Academy said nearly 22,000 members nominated work from the 2023–2024 eligibility year; that is the membership context for nominations, not the number of voters in any one category.

At the ceremony, Hacks won Outstanding Comedy Series. The Bear did not win that series award, but it did take comedy-category acting and directing awards. Its series-level loss therefore was not a rejection of all its comedy entries.
Was The Bear moved to drama?
No. The Bear was still entered, nominated and awarded in comedy categories in 2024. The category placement, the nominations and the eventual vote are separate matters: losing Outstanding Comedy Series did not change the show’s classification.

The Atlantic reported that networks and strategists had sought an Academy review to move the show into the drama race, but the change did not happen before nominations. The ceremony itself nodded to the debate. Co-host Eugene Levy said, “I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy,” then added, “But in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”
Does the result mean voters decided it is not a comedy?
That is a pointed interpretation of the series award, not an established fact about voters’ shared view. The Academy’s public nominations and results show which categories The Bear entered and which awards it won; they do not disclose individual ballots, vote margins or voters’ reasoning. No public ballot breakdown establishes that voters collectively judged the show not to be a comedy.

The disagreement is also about what counts as comedy, not just where a series is placed in an awards race. Executive producer Josh Senior described the show to The Atlantic this way: “I think the show is true to life. Sometimes it’s funny, and sometimes it’s real.” That is his characterization of the series, not an Academy rule for assigning categories.

There is no single answer that the 2024 Emmy results can settle. Viewers who focus on the series’ intensity and dramatic tone may reject the comedy label; others may see its humor alongside that drama. The awards record gives a narrower answer: the Academy’s 2024 comedy categories included The Bear, and it won in some of them while losing the top series prize to Hacks.
