In its visual ambitions and drawing-led approach to storytelling, Twilight of the Gods has a clear Zack Snyder stamp. But “pure Zack Snyder” is an interpretation, not a literal account of authorship: Jay Oliva and Eric Carrasco co-created the series, other directors helmed episodes, and Xilam Animation produced the animation.
What is Twilight of the Gods about?
Netflix’s adult animated fantasy reimagines a Norse mythological world as a violent quest for vengeance. Leif, a mortal king, falls in love with the warrior Sigrid after she saves him on the battlefield. On their wedding night, Thor attacks; the couple survives and sets out with a band of crusaders to seek revenge. The story’s episodes follow that quest through encounters with warriors, gods, fantastical creatures, and a search for iron capable of killing a god. Why does the series feel like Snyder?
A drawing-led way of working
Snyder has described a process that makes animation a natural fit for his visual planning. In a September 20, 2024 interview with Animation Scoop, he said: “I draw a lot. I do tell a lot of stories in pre-production with drawings, with 2D representations to say, ‘This is what I want to do.’ That style translates really translates easily to animation.” He added that he does not approach animation very differently from live action.
A mythic, storybook target
Snyder also said the team wanted a look that “really captured 2D and mythology and had almost a storybook quality to it.” In a September 26, 2024 interview with SciFi Vision, he described character design as a substantial process and said he pushed for that visual direction. Those comments support the “pure Snyder” reading as a claim about method and intended style: the animation gives tangible form to images and compositions planned in drawings, while the mythic storybook look was a deliberate creative goal.

How much of it is actually Snyder’s?
Snyder’s influence is substantial, but the credits describe a collaboration rather than a solo creation. Netflix credits Zack Snyder, Jay Oliva, and Eric Carrasco as co-creators. Snyder also executive-produced the series and directed its first and final episodes. The other listed episode directors are Oliva, Andrew Tamandl, Tim Divar, and Dave Hartman. Stone Quarry Animation is the production banner, and Xilam Animation is credited as the animation house. What is the story’s emotional center?
The premise promises divine violence and revenge, but the creators have emphasized the relationship driving that violence. Co-creator Jay Oliva said, “At its core, I wanted Twilight of the Gods to be a love story.” In a September 11, 2024 interview with What’s on Netflix, Oliva described developing the idea with Snyder before Eric Carrasco joined as head writer; Carrasco and the writing team then developed the episode scripts. Oliva framed the central tension as love and loyalty under the pressure of vengeance. Deborah Snyder likewise described the show as a revenge quest with Leif and Sigrid’s love story at its heart in the Animation Scoop interview.
Oliva’s account of the creative conception is not a historical guide to Norse belief. It explains the show’s dramatic lens: two human characters and their bond set against a world shaped by catastrophe and divine conflict.
