Probably—but the public record does not reveal how much. Macaulay Culkin has said that his contract for Home Alone 2: Lost in New York included about 5% of net profits and 15% of merchandising. He may also receive guild residuals when the films are reused or distributed through television, physical media, digital stores, or streaming services.
That does not prove that Culkin receives a fixed payment every time someone watches Home Alone, nor does it establish that he owns 15% of merchandise connected to the entire franchise. The strongest evidence concerns the 1992 sequel—not necessarily the original 1990 film.

The short answer: yes, possibly—but viral claims go too far
Macaulay Culkin almost certainly had—and may still have—more than one source of compensation connected to playing Kevin McCallister. Those sources should be separated:
- Residuals: payments that can be triggered when a film is reused or distributed through covered media under a guild or individual contract.
- Backend participation: a negotiated share of a film’s profits, usually subject to contract definitions of revenue, expenses, accounting, and “net” profit.
- Merchandising participation: a contractual share of specified merchandise revenue, if the agreement covers those products and remains payable.
In ordinary conversation, all three are often called “royalties.” For an actor, however, residuals is usually the more precise term for payments associated with later exhibition, while profit participation and merchandising are separate contractual arrangements.
#1 Best Overall
The available evidence supports the conclusion that Culkin’s Home Alone 2 deal was unusually favorable for a child actor of the early 1990s. It does not support a reliable current annual income figure or a confirmed lifetime total.
What Culkin has publicly said about his Home Alone 2 contract
Culkin starred as Kevin McCallister in the original Home Alone, released in 1990, and returned for Home Alone 2: Lost in New York in 1992. Public reporting has long placed his upfront salary for the sequel at approximately $4.5 million.
In an August 2025 appearance on Hot Ones, Culkin reportedly explained that the sequel was especially attractive to him because the deal included more than a large salary. The wording reported from the interview was that he believed he had approximately 5% of the net profits and 15% of merchandising.
That is important first-person evidence, but it is not the same as seeing the contract. The public does not have the agreement’s definitions of “net,” the accounting rules, deductions, audit rights, territories, duration, product categories, or conditions for payment. A percentage of net profits can also produce far less than a percentage of gross revenue if the contract permits substantial costs to be deducted before profits are calculated.

It has not been conclusively established. Culkin’s merchandising comment was made in the context of explaining his Home Alone 2 compensation. Many online summaries have transformed that into the broader claim that he receives 15% of all Home Alone merchandise forever.
The available evidence does not justify that expansion. The sequel discussion may describe terms attached specifically to Home Alone 2, or to merchandise covered by that particular agreement. It does not publicly prove that Culkin received the same arrangement for the 1990 original, that the percentage covers every later franchise product, or that the clause remains payable on every item sold today.
The distinction matters because the question concerns an iconic role across a larger property, while the best-documented compensation statement concerns one sequel contract.

The Talkboy was real merchandising—but not proof of current income
The Talkboy is a useful example of the commercial world surrounding Home Alone 2. Kevin uses the voice-changing recording device in the film, and the product became a prominent tie-in associated with the movie. Its success helped make the sequel’s merchandising arrangement especially significant.
But historical popularity is not the same as a current royalty stream. The original Talkboy is generally described as discontinued or defunct. Past sales may help explain why merchandising was valuable when the sequel was released, but they do not show that Culkin is currently paid on new Talkboy sales—or that new sales exist at meaningful scale.
The same caution applies to modern ornaments, apparel, toys, collectibles, and other licensed products. A product may be connected to the Home Alone brand without being covered by Culkin’s contract, and a product covered by a contract may be subject to accounting terms that are not public.
Residuals could still be generated by the films
SAG-AFTRA describes residuals as payments to principal performers when a film is reused or distributed. The applicable formulas vary according to the agreement and exhibition market. Published union materials identify categories including television, physical discs, ad-supported streaming, paid subscription or internet rental, and electronic sell-through.
That makes continuing residual payments legally and operationally plausible for a qualifying performer. Home Alone remains commercially distributed: the film has been listed by Disney+ and has also been available through digital rental or purchase storefronts tracked by availability services. The films’ continued circulation means there can be continuing reporting and, depending on the governing agreement, residual obligations.

Residuals may be calculated under negotiated formulas rather than as a simple percentage of a platform’s subscription revenue. The result can depend on:
- the specific collective bargaining agreement or personal contract;
- the performer’s compensation and work history;
- the medium and exhibition category;
- the territory in which the film is shown;
- the length and type of reuse;
- distribution and reporting arrangements; and
- any contract-specific exclusions or payment thresholds.
Therefore, “the movie is on Disney+” supports the possibility of residual reporting. It does not establish that Culkin received a particular amount on a particular date.
Residuals are not the same as profit participation
These terms are often mixed together in celebrity-income stories, but they describe different mechanisms.
| Payment type | What can trigger it | What remains unknown here |
|---|---|---|
| Residuals | Reuse or distribution through covered media under a guild or individual agreement | The exact formulas, territories, reporting, and amounts payable to Culkin |
| Net-profit participation | The film reaching a contract-defined profit after permitted deductions | How “net” was defined and whether the film generated payable net profits under the contract |
| Merchandising participation | Sales of products covered by the agreement | Which products, territories, periods, accounting base, and continuing rights are covered |
A person can receive residuals even when a net-profit participation produces nothing, because the calculations and triggers are different. Conversely, a profitable product line does not automatically create an actor’s merchandising payment unless the contract covers it.
What about the original Home Alone?
The original 1990 film is the source of Culkin’s iconic performance and remains widely watched. But no verified public copy of his original contract was identified in the reviewed material. That means there is no solid public basis for assigning the sequel’s reported 5% and 15% figures to the first movie.
It is reasonable to say that Culkin may receive residuals or other contract-related payments connected to the original. It is not responsible to state that he definitely receives 15% of all Home Alone merchandise or a known percentage of every modern rental, purchase, or stream.
The original film’s current home-video availability also should not be treated as a direct payment ledger. Buying a disc or renting the film supports the authorized home-entertainment ecosystem, but the public evidence does not show that a known percentage of a particular consumer transaction goes directly to Culkin.
Where to watch or own the film
Availability changes by country and date. In the United States, the film has been listed on Disney+ and has also appeared through transactional digital storefronts. A physical edition such as the Home Alone 4K UHD Blu-ray can be useful for readers who want permanent access rather than relying on a rotating streaming catalog.

There is no authoritative public statement in the reviewed sources giving Culkin’s current annual Home Alone income. Nor is there a public payment ledger showing how much he has received from the original, the sequel, residuals, merchandising, or later digital exploitation.

Celebrity-net-worth websites and viral posts may offer specific totals, sometimes reaching dramatic nine-figure claims. Those figures should be treated as estimates unless supported by contracts, studio accounting, guild records, tax filings, or other financial documentation. A film’s box-office success does not by itself reveal an actor’s income, and a reported percentage of “net” profits is not equivalent to a percentage of worldwide gross revenue.
A practical evidence test for future claims
When a new article claims that Culkin is still earning a particular amount, ask four questions:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Which film? Is the claim about the 1990 original, the 1992 sequel, or the franchise generally?
- Which payment stream? Does it mean residuals, net profits, merchandising, or merely a speculative estimate?
- What is the source? Is the number based on Culkin’s own statement, a published contract, union guidance, studio accounting, or an unsourced celebrity-finance website?
- What is the calculation base? Is the percentage applied to gross revenue, defined net profits, wholesale receipts, licensed-product revenue, or a guild formula?
Unless those questions have clear answers, the claim should be described as uncertain rather than as a confirmed royalty figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Macaulay Culkin get paid every time Home Alone streams?
Not necessarily. He may be eligible for residuals under applicable guild or individual agreements, but residuals are generally calculated under contract formulas. Public evidence does not establish a fixed payment for every stream or a payment from every subscription transaction.
Did Macaulay Culkin receive 15% of all Home Alone merchandise?
That broad claim has not been proven. Culkin publicly discussed approximately 15% merchandising participation in connection with his Home Alone 2 compensation. The available evidence does not conclusively show that the figure applies to every product from the entire franchise or remains payable on all current merchandise.
How much does Macaulay Culkin make from Home Alone today?
No reliable public source reviewed provides a current annual total. Any exact figure should be treated as an estimate unless supported by private contract or financial records.
Was Culkin paid more for Home Alone 2?
Public reporting places his Home Alone 2 upfront salary at approximately $4.5 million, and Culkin has also described a deal involving about 5% of net profits and 15% of merchandising. The contract itself and its detailed accounting terms are not publicly available.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Macaulay Culkin may still receive money connected to Kevin McCallister through residuals and possibly contractual profit or merchandising participation. The clearest public evidence is his statement about the unusually favorable Home Alone 2 deal. What remains unproven is the size of his current income, whether the same merchandising terms apply to the original film, and whether he receives a direct payment from each modern stream, rental, purchase, or merchandise sale.
