ITV’s six-part drama Joan is inspired by real jewel thief Joan Hannington and her autobiography, I Am What I Am. It is not a literal reconstruction: writer Anna Symon has said the series changes crimes and chronology and adds events to shape its dramatic story.
Who was Joan Hannington?
Joan Hannington was a real person whom ITV described as a notorious jewel thief, nicknamed “The Godmother.” The drama takes its starting point from Hannington’s life and her memoir, rather than presenting an independently verified account of every event shown on screen. ITV’s commissioning announcement says writer Anna Symon met Hannington while developing the series from her memoirs.
What is the ITV series about?
Joan is a six-part drama written by Anna Symon and starring Sophie Turner. Set in 1980s London, ITV’s synopsis follows Hannington as a young mother and describes her relationships with Gary and her daughter Kelly, as well as her move into the criminal underworld after meeting Boisie. Those plot details are ITV’s description of the drama; they should not automatically be treated as verified biographical facts. Read ITV’s series description.
How much of Joan is true?
The real Hannington and her memoir are the biographical foundation, but the series takes substantial dramatic liberties. The Royal Television Society reported in September 2024 that Symon described the adaptation as “loosely inspired” by the book. Symon said she changed or added crimes—including swallowing diamonds and switching rings—and inserted heists at key points. She also adjusted events and chronology to support the story’s emotional aims. The Royal Television Society’s behind-the-scenes report quotes Symon saying, “The guiding point was that I wanted it to fit the emotional truth of her as a person.”

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

That distinction matters when judging individual scenes: a crime or relationship included in the television plot is not necessarily a documented incident from Hannington’s life. ITV itself describes the show as inspired by “the real Joan Hannington and certain events from her life,” rather than claiming it recounts every event exactly. ITV’s wording is a useful guide to the intended boundary.

ITV News repeats an estimate that Hannington made millions, but its report does not identify the estimate’s original source or methodology. It should not be presented as a verified total. The same article reproduces a 1998 interview in which Hannington said, “No, why be a hypocrite? I wasn’t feeling guilty for 25 years when I was living the good life, so why be a hypocrite?” That quote reflects her answer in the interview; it does not establish an earnings figure or independently verify the events dramatized in the series.
