The series includes frequent strong language, martial-arts and street fights, bullying, alcohol and vaping, sexual references, and teen kissing. It also explores perseverance, courage, redemption, friendship, and cooperation. Whether it is appropriate for your child depends on their age and sensitivities, your household’s standards, and the advisories for the season in your region.
What do the age ratings mean?
Netflix’s U.S. title page lists Cobra Kai as TV-14. Common Sense Media gives it an age-15+ recommendation. These are different kinds of guidance: Netflix supplies a platform maturity rating, while Common Sense Media offers an independent editorial recommendation, not a legal age threshold.

Netflix says its maturity ratings reflect the frequency and impact of mature material, including violence, sex, adult language, nudity, and substance use. Ratings can vary by region, and a series page may show its overall or highest maturity level even when individual seasons have different ratings. Check the rating and content advisories on your Netflix account for the season you plan to watch. See Netflix’s Cobra Kai title page and its explanation of maturity ratings for TV shows and movies.

- This season, with Cobra Kai eliminated from the Valley, our senseis and students must decide if and how they will compete in the Sekai Taikai — the world championships of karate.
Violence and bullying
The show features martial-arts competitions, hand-to-hand combat, street fights, and bullying. Common Sense Media says the violence is generally not bloody or gory, and injuries often are not shown as lasting. Still, characters repeatedly use fighting to settle disputes and gain power. The review notes that later seasons discuss peaceful solutions with more nuance.
Alcohol, drugs, and smoking
Common Sense Media describes adults drinking beer and vodka, including a character drinking while driving; teens also drink. A teen vapes, marijuana is discussed, and a character smokes cigars.

Sex, romance, and nudity
The review describes sexual talk and references, teen dating and kissing, and romantic complications. It also notes a prank involving a penis drawn on a billboard. The review does not characterize the series as centered on explicit sexual material.
Are there positive themes or role models?
Cobra Kai includes perseverance, courage, redemption, friendship, and cooperation. Its characters are also flawed: Common Sense Media describes Johnny as aggressive and a drinker, and notes racist and sexist language. Rivalries and characters become more nuanced over time, but that development sits alongside the show’s repeated depictions of aggression and other adult behavior.

How to decide if it suits your child
Use the platform’s rating as a starting point, then consider the content details and your child’s individual response. For Cobra Kai, weigh these factors:
- Age and sensitivity: Would your child be comfortable with frequent insults, fighting, or bullying?
- Conflict and behavior: Could repeated portrayals of fighting as a way to resolve disputes affect how they interpret conflict?
- Substance use: Are the adult and teen drinking, vaping, and smoking references within your family’s limits?
- Language and sexual content: Do the profanity, discriminatory language, sexual talk, and teen romance fit your household standards?
- The broader picture: Do the themes of perseverance and cooperation balance the flawed role modeling for your family?
