Yes. Netflix’s 2024 documentary Breaking the Silence: The Maria Soledad Case revisits the real murder of 17-year-old student María Soledad Morales in Catamarca, Argentina, in 1990. Her case prompted years of public demands for justice, known as the “marchas del silencio” (silent marches). The film’s premise is grounded in real events, but the available accounts do not establish that every scene or recollection is independently verified or that the documentary is a complete legal record.
What is the documentary about?
Netflix describes the film as a gathering of Morales’s schoolmates in Catamarca, thirty years after her murder, to commemorate her and retrace the tragedy. That is the platform’s synopsis and framing, not a court finding. Netflix also calls the case Argentina’s first recognized femicide case; that wording should be understood as Netflix’s description, rather than a legal classification independently established by the sources cited here.
The official listing identifies Breaking the Silence: The Maria Soledad Case as a 2024 Netflix documentary. Netflix Media Center synopsis · Netflix catalog listing.

Why were there silent marches?
Morales’s family, friends, and supporters took part in silent marches calling for justice. Radio Nacional’s retrospective describes the marches as led by Martha Pelloni, then rector of Morales’s school. Their quiet, public form became a powerful way to sustain attention on the case.
Academic analysis places the movement within Argentina’s broader history of peaceful protest and connects its form with the marches of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo. The marches were not simply a response to one crime: they became a visible demand for accountability and citizenship in the country’s public life. Alteridades / SciELO México’s 2006 analysis.

What did the trials establish?
A Catamarca municipal history hosted in Argentina’s Ministry of Economy document archive reports that, in the second trial, Guillermo Luque was sentenced to 21 years and Luis Tula to nine years on 27 September 1998. These are reported trial outcomes; the cited institutional history is not the full court judgment.
Radio Nacional Argentina’s 2025 retrospective says the court also ordered a separate investigation into alleged cover-up activity, false documentation, and illicit association. According to that account, the investigation was never carried out. The source also reports that Luque and Tula were released after serving two-thirds of their sentences; it does not establish exact release dates. Neither the reported order nor the uncompleted investigation should be mistaken for convictions of other alleged participants.

The documentary’s central premise—the return of Morales’s classmates to remember her and revisit a real case—is supported by Netflix’s official synopsis. The case, the marches, the reported sentences, and the uncompleted cover-up investigation are also described in institutional and academic sources. Those facts do not verify every scene, memory, or interpretation in the film. The available sources do not establish a scene-by-scene account or substitute for the full court record, so the documentary is best understood as a retrospective about a real tragedy rather than a complete legal history.
