ABC told ABC News, “We have no plans to end the show,” while Ludo Studio and ABC stopped short of confirming another television season. Bluey creator Joe Brumm later clarified that his own break from the TV series was not an announcement that the show was ending. A Bluey feature film was announced in December 2024, but that announcement did not confirm a fourth TV season.
Did “The Sign” mean Bluey was ending?
No. The uncertainty in April 2024 was about what would come next for the television series, not a confirmed decision to cancel it. ABC News reported on 13 April that an ABC spokesperson said, “We have no plans to end the show.” That statement was not a renewal order, however, and it did not specify when another season would arrive.
PerthNow reported on 14 April that Ludo Studio and ABC had not confirmed whether Bluey would continue beyond its third season. Ludo’s statement was: “Whatever comes next, we hope that families love it as much as we’ll love making it for them.” Not confirming a further season is different from announcing that the show is over.
Why fans thought the episode might be a finale
“The Sign” arrived in April 2024 as an extended 28-minute episode, following “Ghostbasket.” That earlier episode ended with a For Sale sign at the Heeler family’s home and the words “to be continued…”. The possibility of a move, combined with the special’s unusually long format and promotional build-up, led viewers to wonder both whether the Heelers were leaving and whether the show was ending. Those were story and marketing cues, not evidence of a cancellation.

The longer format was also a test
Bluey executive producer Daley Pearson described the extended episode as a way to see how audiences responded to a longer format. “It’s no secret that this episode is kind of testing how an audience will go,” he told ABC News, adding, “I think we’ll wait until Sunday to find out and that’ll help us figure out our own future.” His comments made audience response relevant to future plans, but did not announce a decision about another season.
What happened after “The Sign”
An ABC report published on 22 April 2024 noted that “Surprise!” followed “The Sign.” Bluey producer Sam Moor said, “We have more in store and we’re thinking about what would be next.” That was a signal that the people making the show were considering what followed, not a formal order for a fourth season.

What Joe Brumm said about his role
Brumm later explained that he had written a feature-film script and was taking a break from his involvement in the television series. He said “The Sign” would be his TV finale if he could not return to making more seasons himself. He then made the distinction explicit: “To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the film.”
That statement concerns Brumm’s personal role and focus; it should not be read as an announcement that Bluey itself had ended. Nor does it establish that a later TV season was ordered.

What the 2024 film announcement confirmed
On 17 December 2024, The Walt Disney Company announced a Bluey animated feature film, with a planned theatrical release in 2027 followed by streaming on Disney+. The announcement also cited Nielsen Media Research figures showing that Bluey had been watched for more than 50.5 billion minutes—842 million hours—in the United States through 24 November 2024. Disney described Bluey as the most-watched series globally on Disney+ in 2024. Those viewing claims are attributed to Disney’s announcement and do not establish the status of the television series.
The film is a confirmed announcement in that source, with a planned release window that could change. It is not confirmation of a fourth TV season. The cited statements establish that ABC said it had no plans to end the show, that Brumm distinguished his own TV break from the show’s future, and that a film was announced; they do not establish a definitive later-season order or release plan.
