Logan Paul’s most consequential controversies unfolded in two distinct periods: the 2017 Aokigahara vlog and YouTube’s sanctions in 2018, followed years later by backlash and litigation over the CryptoZoo NFT game. The first led to direct platform consequences; the second involves investor allegations, Paul’s proposed buyback, and court proceedings that must not be mistaken for a finding of fraud.
December 2017–January 2018: The Aokigahara vlog
On December 31, 2017, Paul posted a vlog filmed in Aokigahara, a forest in Japan. The place is often called the “suicide forest” in media coverage, but Aokigahara is its proper name. The video included footage of a deceased man and showed Paul and others joking at the scene. TechCrunch reported that the video drew more than one million views before Paul removed it within 24 hours.
Paul apologized. In the contemporary account, he said he had intended to focus on the forest’s haunted reputation and framed the video as an effort to raise awareness of suicide and suicide prevention. Those were his explanations of his intent, not independently established facts. TechCrunch’s January 2018 report covered the video and apology.
January 2018: YouTube imposes platform and project sanctions
YouTube’s response began with consequences beyond public criticism. TIME reported that the company removed Paul from Google Preferred, suspended production on a planned original movie, and removed him from the fourth season of Foursome. YouTube said his channel violated its community guidelines and that it was considering further consequences. These were reported platform and project actions, not court penalties. TIME’s coverage described the January measures.

February 2018: YouTube temporarily suspends advertising
In February, YouTube temporarily suspended advertising on Paul’s channels, citing a pattern of behavior. The Guardian and Sky News connected the decision to additional content, including a video in which Paul tasered two dead rats and removed a live fish from water, as well as his earlier tweet about the Tide Pod Challenge. YouTube spokespersons characterized the move as a judgment about advertiser suitability and potential effects on the creator community.
“This is not a decision we made lightly, however, we believe he has exhibited a pattern of behaviour in his videos that makes his channel not only unsuitable for advertisers, but also potentially damaging to the broader creator community.”

The Guardian quoted the spokesperson on February 9, 2018. The advertising suspension was described as temporary. Historical subscriber counts reported at the time—more than 15 million by TechCrunch and more than 16 million by Sky News—are not current audience figures. The Guardian’s report and Sky News’s coverage reported the decision and its context.
2021–2023: CryptoZoo and other crypto ventures
What CryptoZoo was supposed to be
CryptoZoo was promoted in 2021 as an NFT-based game. TIME described a concept involving tokens and digital animal NFTs that players could hatch and breed, with the assets intended to gain value. TIME’s investigation reported delays and accounts from buyers who said they lost money; it also covered Paul’s statements about his role and plans to complete or repair the project. TIME and TechCrunch coverage described the game as not materializing as promised in the accounts they reviewed. That description does not establish one verified total loss across buyers.

What investors alleged, and Paul’s response
In a class-action complaint filed in Texas, plaintiffs alleged fraud and other misconduct connected to CryptoZoo. Those are allegations, not findings that Paul committed fraud. In February 2023, Paul’s legal representative, Jeffrey Neiman, rejected the suit’s claims and called it “a careless civil action,” adding that the defense expected it to be dismissed. That was the defendant’s position, not a judicial conclusion.
Dink Doink and limits of blockchain attribution
TIME also examined Paul’s promotion and involvement in the Dink Doink meme coin. Its reporting discussed blockchain links but did not establish conclusive proof of wallet ownership. Any account of that connection should therefore remain attributed to TIME’s analysis rather than state that a particular wallet was definitively Paul’s. January 2024: Paul announces a proposed NFT buyback
Paul announced a proposed buyback for certain CryptoZoo NFTs in January 2024. TechCrunch reported that eligible claimants had to waive claims against him to receive payment. Paul said the game had not been completed and presented the proposal as compensation for intended players, not people who lost money trading tokens. He said, “Like you, I was highly disappointed that the game was not delivered.” These were the terms and rationale reported at the time; the announcement should not be read as evidence that the offer remains open or that every buyer qualified for payment. TechCrunch’s January 2024 report described the proposal.

A July 2025 report by a U.S. magistrate judge in Holland v. CryptoZoo Inc. et al. recited plaintiffs’ allegations and recommended granting Danielle Strobel’s motion to dismiss for lack of personal jurisdiction, without prejudice. A magistrate judge’s recommendation is not a blanket ruling on all defendants, and the document does not find that the alleged scheme occurred. It also does not, by itself, establish the final or current status of claims against Paul. The July 2025 court report concerns that specific motion and defendant.
