American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders is a plausible pick if you enjoy layered investigative true crime and sprawling conspiracy stories. It may be a frustrating watch if you want a concise account with a clear, firmly resolved case. Rotten Tomatoes reflects that divide: critics were more positive than audience raters. This recommendation is based on the published reviews and Netflix’s description, not a first-hand viewing assessment.
What is The Octopus Murders about?
Netflix describes a four-part docuseries released on February 28, 2024, and directed by Zachary Treitz. Its full title is American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders. The series revisits journalist Danny Casolaro, who was found dead in a hotel bathtub; police ruled his death a suicide, while family and colleagues suspected he may have been murdered because of his investigation.
Casolaro called the alleged conspiracy he was pursuing “The Octopus.” Netflix’s synopsis connects it to stolen government spy software, unsolved murders, and political scandals, then follows researcher Christian Hansen as he investigates the story and Casolaro’s death. Those connections are the subject of the series, not independently established findings. Netflix’s series page describes the premise, credits, and release date.
What do the Rotten Tomatoes scores say?
Rotten Tomatoes showed an 83% Tomatometer from 12 critic reviews and a 52% Popcornmeter from 50+ audience ratings when checked in 2026. The Tomatometer reflects the share of reviews the aggregator categorizes as positive; the Popcornmeter represents user ratings. They measure different groups, and the displayed audience sample is 50 or more ratings—not a universal verdict. Both figures can change as reviews and ratings are added. See the Rotten Tomatoes page for its current snapshot.

Why are reviews divided?
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls the series “A handsomely produced delve into a truly far-out true crime tale.” The page’s review excerpts show the range behind that response: one critic praises an absorbing character study and gripping conspiracy thriller, while other reviews object to a frustrating progression or describe the story as tedious and sensationalized. Rotten Tomatoes’ reviews and consensus provide the individual reactions.
That split makes the series’ fit depend on what you want from true crime. If you like investigations that gather unusual connections and follow a researcher into ambiguous territory, the premise and stronger critical response may appeal. If you prefer a focused account that quickly clarifies what happened and resolves the central questions, the lower audience score and criticisms of the unfolding narrative are reasons to be cautious.
