Irv Gotti, the music executive and producer who co-founded Murder Inc. Records with his brother and helped bring Ja Rule and Ashanti to prominence, died at 54. His family said he died on February 5, 2025, and Def Jam confirmed his death. The announcement did not identify a cause of death.
What was Irv Gotti known for?
Born Irving Lorenzo, Gotti was a producer and record executive whose best-known institutional legacy was Murder Inc., a hip-hop and R&B imprint he launched with his brother in the late 1990s. Murder Inc.’s signature sound and reach were reflected in rap-led singles and R&B crossovers. Representative records include Ja Rule and Ashanti’s “Always on Time,” Ashanti’s “Foolish,” Jennifer Lopez and Ja Rule’s “I’m Real,” and Fat Joe’s “What’s Luv” featuring Ja Rule and Ashanti. These are examples of the label’s prominent work, not a complete account of Gotti’s catalog.
How did Murder Inc. shape its sound?
A 2002 Billboard report offers a period view of Gotti’s ambition for the imprint. He described wanting to build a bridge between the sounds associated with Death Row and Bad Boy. That framing helps explain Murder Inc.’s combination of rap-driven records and accessible R&B collaborations, including the hits associated with Ja Rule and Ashanti.

The same Billboard report identifies Irv Gotti Presents: The Inc. as a Gotti-helmed compilation. That establishes the release as part of his work, but does not establish what editions are currently available.
What records did Gotti produce beyond Murder Inc.?
Gotti’s work also extended to recordings by artists outside the label’s central roster. The Associated Press names Jay-Z’s “Can I Get A…” and DMX’s “We Don’t Give a …,” featuring Jadakiss and Sheek Louch, among his production credits. Those tracks illustrate a wider set of collaborations; they should not be taken as an exhaustive list.

Def Jam announced Gotti’s death late Wednesday night, according to the Associated Press. The family statement reported by the Los Angeles Times said he died on February 5, 2025. Neither account gave a cause of death. The Times also reported prior strokes and diabetes-related health issues, but those reports do not establish what caused his death.

In its statement, Def Jam described Gotti as “a force that reshaped the soundscape of hip-hop and R&B,” as relayed by The FADER. The phrase reflects the label’s tribute to an executive whose imprint joined rap artists, R&B singers, and crossover collaborators under one banner.
