Some iPhone and iPad owners reported that the Netflix app rejected sign-ins, returned them to the login screen, crashed, or became unstable around the iOS 11.4 release period in 2018. The problem was not universal: other users on iOS 11.4 could still watch normally. Contemporary reports said Netflix support knew about the issue and was working on an app update, but no verified public Netflix bulletin, root-cause explanation, or permanent fix version is established in the available record.
What failed
The central complaint was access through the native Netflix app, not necessarily a bad account. Reported symptoms included:

- Valid credentials being rejected.
- Repeated “Please sign in again” or account-information errors.
- A login screen that stalled, crashed, or returned to the sign-in page.
- Netflix working in Safari while the app failed.
- Separate reports of crashes, instability, or playback trouble after login.
These symptoms should not be treated as one identical failure. A playback problem after successful authentication can have a different cause from an app that cannot complete sign-in.
Did iOS 11.4 break Netflix for everyone?
No. The contemporaneous MacRumors discussion, which began on May 31, 2018, contains reports from affected users as well as people whose Netflix app worked on iOS 11.4 or on other iOS versions. A report from iGeneration also associated Netflix failures with recent iOS 11.4 and iOS 12 beta builds. The safer description is a problem affecting certain device, operating-system, and app combinations.

What Netflix reportedly knew
Users participating in the MacRumors thread said Netflix support told them engineering was aware of the failure and was working on an app update. That is useful contemporary corroboration, but it is not the same as a preserved official Netflix incident announcement. The available reports do not identify the exact app version that caused the problem or the version that definitively resolved it.
First, separate an account problem from an app problem
- Open Safari on the affected iPhone or iPad.
- Go to Netflix.com and sign in.
- If browser access fails too, check the account, password, network, and service status rather than assuming the app is at fault.
- If Safari works but the app does not, the evidence points toward stale app data, a failed authentication session, or a device-specific compatibility problem. That is a troubleshooting inference, not proof of the 2018 bug’s root cause.
For certain current iPhone and iPad account errors, Netflix directs users to netflix.com/clearcookies, choose Sign In, and authenticate again. Browser playback may not match the native app in features, downloads, or behavior.

Practical steps, in the safest order
1. Check the credentials without assuming they are wrong
If the same email address and password work at Netflix.com or on another device, changing the password is not automatically necessary. If sign-in fails everywhere, review Netflix account emails, password-reset options, network access, and possible service-wide problems.
2. Force-close Netflix and restart the device
Close the app, restart the iPhone or iPad, and try again. Netflix includes restarting in its current guidance for comparable account errors at its help page. A restart is a low-risk step, not a confirmed cure for the 2018 compatibility incident.

3. Update the Netflix app
Open the App Store, search for Netflix, and select Update if it is offered. An app update was the remedy reportedly being prepared in 2018, but no specific fix release is verified here. Netflix’s current “Please sign in again” instructions are at help.netflix.com/en/node/100695.
4. Update iOS when the device supports it
Install the newest iOS version available for that iPhone or iPad if an update is offered. Older hardware may not be eligible, and there is no reliable evidence here to recommend downgrading iOS.

5. Reset or reinstall Netflix
Netflix’s current iPhone and iPad guidance says to use the app’s Reset control in Settings when available. If reset is unavailable or ineffective, delete Netflix, download it again from the App Store, and sign in. The exact Settings layout on iOS 11.4 may differ from current instructions.

6. Use a temporary alternative
Continue in Safari if it plays successfully, or use another supported phone, tablet, computer, television, or streaming device. Waiting for an app update was also reasonable when support had reportedly acknowledged a known defect, but it provided no immediate access.
7. Contact Netflix with useful diagnostic details
- iPhone or iPad model.
- Exact iOS version.
- Netflix app version.
- Exact error text or a description of the crash.
- Whether Safari login works.
- Whether another Netflix-supported device works.
- When the failure began and whether it followed an OS or app update.

What remains unverified
- The exact Netflix app version involved.
- Whether Apple or Netflix formally classified it as an iOS 11.4 bug.
- The number or percentage of affected users.
- Whether authentication, local storage, an operating-system API change, or a server-side compatibility issue caused it.
- The precise release that permanently resolved the problem.
- Whether every report came from stable iOS 11.4 rather than an iOS 12 beta or another combination.
The Netflix App Store listing shows that the app continues to be maintained, but that current status does not establish how or when the 2018 incident was fixed.
The Bottom Line
Netflix login failures on some iPhones and iPads during the iOS 11.4 period were a legitimate app or compatibility problem under investigation, not proof that every iOS 11.4 user—or every Netflix account—was broken.
