Deinterlace interlaced footage before it reaches a progressive live-stream output. First verify the source’s scan type, resolution, frame rate, and field order; then choose whether to produce one progressive frame per pair of fields or one per field. The first option uses a lower output frame rate. The second can preserve more motion detail, but asks the processing and encoding chain to handle more frames.

What interlaced video means for a live stream

Interlaced video represents a picture as two fields, each containing part of the image. Those fields can capture different moments in time. If they are simply combined into a progressive frame, movement between them may appear as comb-like edges or other motion artifacts. Deinterlacing converts the fields into progressive frames, using an algorithm that may produce one frame per pair of fields or one frame per field.

Do not treat “1080i50” as shorthand for “1080p25” or “1080p50” without checking what the source and pipeline mean by those labels. Interlaced and progressive rates describe different things; identify the actual source standard and cadence before selecting an output. AWS Elemental Live’s guide describes the distinction between deinterlacing, inverse telecine, and adaptive processing for different source types: AWS Elemental Live User Guide.

Identify the source before changing settings

Check the camera, broadcast feed, capture card, or media file—not just the resolution shown in a streaming application. Establish these details:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Scan type: Is the input interlaced or already progressive?
  • Resolution and rate: Record the full source mode and its standard, such as 1080i50 or 1080i59.94, rather than inferring it from a rounded frame-rate label.
  • Field order: Determine which field is first. Incorrect field order can make motion look wrong even after processing.
  • Source type: Live camera or broadcast footage, film transferred to video, and already-progressive material may need different processing. Deinterlacing and inverse telecine are distinct operations.
  • Capture behavior: Verify whether the capture device accepts that exact mode and whether it deinterlaces, passes fields through, or leaves conversion to software.

A capture card should not be assumed to support every interlaced mode or to convert it automatically. Check its documented input resolution, frame rate, field order, and processing behavior before building the workflow.

Choose the progressive output cadence

There are two common deinterlacing outcomes. The right choice depends on the source cadence, destination requirements, motion quality, and what the whole system can process.

Approach Output Trade-off
One progressive frame per pair of fields Lower frame rate; AWS gives 1080i30 to 1080p30 as an example. Fewer frames to process and encode, but less temporal motion detail than a field-rate output.
One progressive frame per field Field-rate output; AWS describes examples such as 29.97 to 59.94 or 25 to 50, and AMD illustrates 1080i60 to 1080p60. Can retain more motion cadence, but doubles the progressive frame rate relative to one frame per field pair and increases processing and encoding work.

These examples use different rate conventions, so do not combine their labels or assume that every device reports rates identically. Confirm the source’s exact mode and the destination’s accepted progressive formats. Apple’s HLS authoring specification for Apple devices says interlaced sources must be deinterlaced, recommends 60p rather than 30p for 30i content, and recommends 60 or 59.94 fps for live NTSC/ATSC sources and 50 fps for live PAL sources. Those are Apple HLS recommendations, not universal rules for every streaming destination: Apple HLS authoring specification.

Where to deinterlace in a live workflow

Conversion may happen in capture hardware, streaming software, or a live encoder. Apply it early enough that preview, compositing, and encoding receive clean progressive frames whenever the delivery path requires progressive output.

  1. Inspect the source mode and capture-device documentation. Confirm exact format support and whether the device performs deinterlacing. If it does, determine what format it outputs to the computer.
  2. Check the streaming application’s input and video settings. Configure a progressive output mode appropriate to the source and destination. If conversion is performed in software, confirm the deinterlacing option is enabled for that input and inspect motion in the preview.
  3. Check any separate live encoder. If the signal passes through an encoder or production appliance, verify its scan conversion and field-order settings there. AWS Elemental Live, for example, documents deinterlacing configuration in its pipeline.
  4. Test moving detail before going live. Look for combing, judder, incorrect motion direction, or softness on moving edges. Check the output—not only the input monitor—because conversion may occur downstream.
  5. Confirm ingest requirements and encode settings separately. Deinterlacing does not determine codec, container, bitrate, or service compatibility. Consult the current destination ingest specification. OBS identifies H.264 as its default and widely compatible web-video codec; its format guide also discusses recording-container trade-offs, which should not be mistaken for universal live-stream requirements: OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

Choose a method that fits the motion and system load

Deinterlacing methods handle moving and static areas differently. Spatial-only, temporal, and motion-adaptive processing can trade detail, artifacts, and compute load in different ways; AMD’s Video Processing Subsystem guide describes using spatial and temporal processing to address artifacts. Avoid assuming a particular method is best for every source: judge the result with representative motion, especially fine edges and fast movement.

A field-rate progressive output can preserve more temporal motion detail than producing one frame from each pair of fields, but it requires the pipeline to process and encode more frames. Verify that the capture hardware, software, encoder, and connection sustain the selected mode in the intended setup. A higher output rate is not an improvement if the system drops frames or the destination does not accept it.

Common problems and fixes

  • Combing on moving edges: The source may still be interlaced, or the conversion may be disabled or applied too late. Check where deinterlacing occurs and verify the actual progressive output.
  • Motion looks jerky or unusually soft: Recheck source cadence, field order, and output rate. Confirm whether the workflow is producing one frame per field pair or one per field, and assess whether that cadence suits the content.
  • The capture device will not accept the source: Verify exact resolution, rate, scan type, and field order against the device’s supported modes. Do not infer support from a similar-looking progressive mode.
  • The stream drops frames after changing to a higher rate: The field-rate path increases the number of frames to process and encode. Check system and encoder capacity; if necessary, choose a supported lower-rate progressive output.
  • The stream is rejected despite clean progressive video: Deinterlacing does not guarantee ingest compatibility. Check the destination’s current resolution, frame-rate, and codec requirements independently.

Copyright and reused footage still matter

Deinterlacing changes how footage is displayed; it does not grant rights to stream it or make reused content original. Before broadcasting recorded material, confirm that you have permission to use the video and audio and that the planned stream complies with YouTube’s applicable rules. Technical conversion cannot resolve copyright claims or reused-content concerns.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs a pre-recorded video or playlist to run continuously, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud after you upload the material, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube live streams, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
