Intel Quick Sync Settings for 4K 60fps YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a standard SDR YouTube Live stream at 4K/60, use OBS’s Intel Quick Sync encoder if it is available and supports your chosen codec. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC and AV1 at 2160p60. Those are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not a guarantee that your Intel graphics or internet connection can sustain 4K/60. Test the complete stream path before relying on it.

Check whether your Intel system can use Quick Sync

Quick Sync availability and capabilities depend on the Intel graphics hardware, driver, OBS version, operating system, and codec. OBS documents QSV support on Windows and Linux for systems with Intel HD Graphics on Core-i processors from the 2xxx generation (Sandy Bridge) onward. OBS recommends Core-i 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because earlier QSV generations had lower image quality. These compatibility references do not establish that every listed system can encode 4K/60 reliably.

In OBS, open Settings → Output → Streaming → Encoder. Choose an Intel Quick Sync option only if it appears and the offered encoder supports your intended codec and output. If you also have an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, OBS generally recommends using NVENC or AMF instead; the best choice still depends on the system and workload. OBS explains that hardware encoders move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, while noting that older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. OBS Project: Hardware Encoding.

Recommended OBS settings for 4K/60 SDR

  1. Set the output resolution and frame rate. Configure the output to 3840Ă—2160 and 60 fps only if your source, encoder, and stable upload connection can sustain them. YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically. Manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled.
  2. Choose an ingest codec your QSV encoder actually offers. The available Intel Quick Sync codecs vary by graphics generation and software support. YouTube’s encoder table includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, but that does not mean every QSV system supports all three at 4K/60.
  3. Set rate control to CBR. YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding.
  4. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  5. Enter the bitrate for the selected codec. Use YouTube’s 2160p60 recommendations below as a target, then check whether your measured upload and encoder can sustain it.
  6. Use RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the normal live ingest path. Its 4K/2160p low-latency optimization option is unavailable; 4K streams use normal latency.

What bitrate for YouTube 4K 60fps?

YouTube’s live encoder table, accessed in 2026, gives different 2160p60 bitrate ranges by ingest codec:

Codec YouTube minimum YouTube recommended
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
H.265/HEVC or AV1 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s platform guidance, not a performance rating for Intel hardware. Confirm the exact codec option shown in OBS and compare its recommended bitrate with your measured, stable upload capacity. Leave practical headroom for network variation; if the connection cannot hold the target, lower the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate rather than relying on a nominal 4K/60 configuration that drops frames. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

How to test the whole live setup

Before an important broadcast, make a private or unlisted test and inspect both OBS and YouTube’s stream health. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health and review messages while live. Intel likewise advises measuring upload speed and matching resolution and frame rate to the connection. A test should confirm that YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate, audio is present, the encoder is not overloaded, and neither encoding nor network drops undermine the stream.

  1. Start a test using the same OBS output, QSV codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio, and RTMPS path planned for the actual stream.
  2. Include representative movement and audio rather than testing with a static screen alone.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health and any review messages, and check OBS for encoding overload and dropped frames.
  4. If the stream is unstable, reduce the bitrate first if upload capacity is the constraint; reduce output resolution or frame rate if the encoder or connection still cannot sustain the target.

Intel’s guidance for creators is available at Intel: Streaming.

Should you use H.264, HEVC, or AV1?

Choose from the codecs actually offered by your QSV encoder and supported by the intended YouTube ingest path. YouTube’s recommended 2160p60 bitrate is lower for HEVC and AV1 than for H.264, but the bitrate table alone does not establish which codec your Intel graphics can encode at the target resolution and frame rate. Confirm codec support in OBS, then test image quality and stability on the full stream path. If H.264 is the workable option on your system, use its H.264 bitrate recommendation rather than applying the HEVC/AV1 figure.

HDR requires a different configuration

Do not apply the SDR settings above as though they automatically produce HDR. YouTube HDR live streaming requires compatible HDR content and hardware and an HEVC/H.265 encoding path. YouTube’s OBS setup describes a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, HDR enabled, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space; YouTube recommends HLG. Its page lists Intel 10th Generation graphics or later for compatibility with Mirillis Action!, which is software-specific and does not establish compatibility for every OBS/QSV configuration. Check the current YouTube HDR live streaming setup and verify your own encoder path before attempting an HDR broadcast.

Why is Quick Sync missing in OBS?

  • The graphics hardware may not meet OBS’s documented compatibility floor. OBS documents QSV for Intel HD Graphics on Core-i 2xxx or newer, but this does not guarantee support for every codec or output target.
  • The required Intel graphics may not be available to the system or software. Update OBS and the graphics driver, restart, then check Settings → Output → Streaming → Encoder again.
  • The selected platform, driver, or software configuration may not expose the encoder. OBS documents QSV for Windows and Linux; the actual encoder list on your machine is the practical check. Intel’s guidance says that if QSV does not appear in OBS’s encoder menu, it is not available for that hardware.
  • You may have another suitable GPU encoder. OBS generally recommends NVENC for NVIDIA graphics or AMF for AMD graphics. Test the available hardware encoders against the workload instead of assuming QSV is preferable in a multi-GPU system.

Troubleshooting 4K/60 problems

Symptom Likely constraint What to do
OBS does not list Quick Sync QSV is unavailable for the installed hardware or software configuration. Update OBS and graphics drivers, then check the encoder menu. If it remains absent, use another encoder available on the machine.
OBS lists QSV, but the chosen codec is missing The particular Intel graphics generation or software path does not expose that codec. Select a codec actually offered by OBS and use its corresponding YouTube bitrate guidance.
YouTube reports a poor or unstable stream The bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the stream may not match the intended output. Check YouTube stream health and OBS dropped frames; lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again.
Encoding overload or dropped frames occur The hardware may not sustain the selected output under the current workload. Try a lower output target or a different available hardware encoder, then repeat a representative test.
The stream is 4K but not low latency YouTube does not offer its low-latency optimization option for 4K/2160p. Plan for normal latency at 4K, or reconsider the output target if low latency is essential.
