YouTube Live Stream Bitrate Keeps Dropping: How to Troubleshoot

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your YouTube live stream bitrate keeps dropping, first check whether the encoder’s outgoing bitrate is actually falling or viewers are only experiencing buffering. Then compare YouTube’s stream-health data and your encoder statistics with stable upload capacity. Reduce the stream bitrate or stabilize the connection before changing equipment: a high download speed does not show whether your upload can reliably carry the stream.

1. Confirm what is dropping

Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health, then inspect your encoder’s statistics. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. See the OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide.

  • If the encoder reports dropped frames or its outgoing bitrate falls, investigate the connection between your encoder and YouTube.
  • If the encoder is sending steadily but viewers report buffering, that alone does not establish that your outgoing bitrate is dropping. Check stream health and distinguish a viewer’s playback connection from your encoder’s outbound feed.

2. Check stable upload capacity

Run a speed test and look specifically at upload performance, not just download speed. YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Actual capacity can be lower when other people, devices, or applications share the connection. YouTube’s guidance is on its streaming tips page.

  1. Measure upload speed while the network is being used in the way it will be during the broadcast.
  2. Compare the stream’s total bitrate with the stable upload capacity, leaving room for other traffic and normal variation.
  3. If the speed-test result fluctuates, repeat the test and note whether the problem occurs at particular times or when other devices are active.

OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, but that is OBS troubleshooting guidance, not a YouTube requirement. Use it as a cautious starting estimate, then judge by stability under real conditions. Neither a single speed test nor a percentage guarantees a trouble-free stream.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Match encoder settings to the connection

Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends for RTMP/RTMPS streams. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current encoder table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you use; then make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream with headroom. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Verify the current recommendations in YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, since platform guidance can change.

Selected YouTube recommended video-bitrate values illustrate why the exact encoder settings matter:

Resolution and frame rate H.264 recommended video bitrate AV1/H.265 recommended video bitrate
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps 24 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s recommended video bitrates, not measured internet-speed requirements. The table includes other resolutions and minimum settings. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the applicable recommendation with headroom, lower the bitrate or select a less demanding resolution or frame rate, then check stream health again.

4. Separate network trouble from encoder or source trouble

Check the encoder’s error messages and statistics, CPU load, source quality, and local recording. Update the encoder if it is outdated. If the preview and local recording look healthy but the live stream does not, that points attention toward the outbound connection rather than proving an encoder or source failure.

  • Local recording or preview is also affected: inspect the source and encoder workload as well as the network.
  • Local output is healthy, but the stream drops frames: focus first on upload stability and the route to YouTube’s ingest server.
  • Encoder reports a specific error: use that message to narrow the cause instead of making unrelated hardware changes.

5. Isolate Wi-Fi and other network-path issues

If you stream over Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection. A wired test can help identify wireless instability, but it will not fix an ISP, routing, or other network fault.

Also check whether a VPN, firewall or security suite, network-priority utility, or outdated network driver may be interfering with the connection. OBS notes that dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce dropped frames during congestion, but it does not repair the underlying connection and may reduce video quality. Treat it as a way to manage symptoms, not a substitute for stable upload capacity.

6. Escalate only when the evidence points there

If there are signs of a local equipment problem, investigate modem or router connectivity and check cables, network cards, and other devices in the connection path. OBS lists these as possible fault points; their presence on that list does not mean any one device is defective. Avoid replacing equipment without evidence.

If repeated connection tests show a persistent outbound problem while the encoder is otherwise healthy, contact your internet service provider (ISP) and describe the upload results and stream symptoms. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance is another reference for diagnosing stream problems.
