But those figures described selective, negotiated recruitment deals—not a public program that pays everyone for uploading ordinary videos.
The short answer
Instagram and its parent company, Meta, used cash incentives to attract proven TikTok personalities to Reels as the platforms competed for creators, viewers and cultural attention. The largest reported offers were aimed at creators with substantial audiences and were tied to specific contractual obligations.
There is no evidence of a universal “post a Reel, receive a huge payment” scheme. A creator’s access to any Instagram monetization product can depend on account status, country, invitation, performance, policy compliance and the terms of a particular campaign.
What the reported offers involved
The Information reported that Instagram discussed monthly offers ranging from approximately $10,000 to $50,000 or more with selected TikTok creators. These were reported figures from sources familiar with the discussions, not a public Instagram rate card.

The broad arrangement reportedly involved creating original short-form videos for Instagram, sometimes publishing them on Instagram first, and observing an exclusivity period before posting the same material elsewhere. The reported exclusivity windows ranged from about a month to several months.
The available reporting does not establish one standard contract. Individual agreements could differ over the number of videos, minimum performance, content category, approvals, promotional duties, rights and payment schedule. A creator should therefore treat the headline amount as the starting point for evaluating a contract—not as a guaranteed market rate.
Who was being targeted?
The large offers were intended for established TikTok creators, not ordinary Instagram users. Selection would plausibly favor audience size, average views, engagement, content category, brand-safety record, geographic market and the creator’s ability to produce original videos consistently. Representation by a manager or talent agency could also make contract negotiations easier, but it does not guarantee an offer.

The commercial logic was straightforward: recruiting creators who already knew how to make popular short-form video could give Reels an immediate supply of experienced talent and familiar formats. It could also help Meta compete for viewing time and attention without waiting for every creator to build a new audience from scratch.

Meta also publicly confirmed a separate Breakthrough Bonus aimed at TikTok creators posting Reels to Facebook and Instagram. The reported earning potential was up to $5,000 over three months, far below the largest privately reported recruitment offers. The Information’s report describes the program and its ceiling.
That distinction matters. A $5,000, three-month invitation and a negotiated $50,000-per-month recruitment contract are different products with different eligibility rules. Neither should be presented as a standard payment available to every Reels creator.

What happened to Reels Play?
Several different programs have been grouped together under the phrase “Instagram Reels bonuses.” The timeline is more complicated:
- July 2021: Meta announced a broader $1 billion creator investment and Instagram Reels summer bonuses. Meta’s announcement described the wider initiative.
- February 2022: Meta described Facebook Reels Play payments of up to $35,000 per month for eligible creators. That figure referred to the Facebook program, not every Instagram creator. Meta’s announcement provides the context.
- March 9, 2023: Meta stopped extending new and renewed Instagram Reels Play deals in the United States and India. Existing deals continued until their expiration. The program was invitation-only. Instagram’s help information explains the status.
- Late 2023–2024: Meta described limited holiday, New Year’s and spring Instagram bonus tests for selected creators in specified markets. These were also invitations, not an open global application. Meta’s announcement names the holiday test and later seasonal extensions.
Consequently, old articles claiming that Reels Play is an active, universal Instagram paycheck are misleading. The legacy program is no longer active as a generally extendable deal, and newer tests may have different rules, countries and end dates.
How could a bonus be calculated?
There has never been one universal Reels payment rate. Depending on the arrangement, compensation could be:

- Performance-based: tied to qualifying Reel plays or other metrics.
- Output-based: tied to producing a defined number of videos.
- Prompt- or campaign-based: tied to a theme, event or limited promotional period.
- Fixed and negotiated: a set payment or monthly amount agreed with a selected creator.
The legacy Reels Play rules warned that rates could change, not every play would necessarily count, and minimum payout thresholds could apply. They also excluded or penalized content involving third-party watermarks, rights-holder claims, branded content, unsupported languages, fraudulent engagement or permanently deleted Reels. Those historical restrictions should not automatically be assumed to apply identically to every private contract or later bonus.

The headline payment is only one part of the decision. Before agreeing to a Reels deal, confirm:
- the guaranteed total and whether any amount depends on views or approvals;
- the required number and format of Reels;
- minimum view, engagement or posting thresholds;
- the exact exclusivity or first-posting period;
- whether the same video may appear on TikTok, YouTube Shorts or another platform;
- who owns the footage and whether Meta receives broad licensing rights;
- whether branded content, sponsorships or certain music are prohibited;
- the approval process, payment date, payout threshold and tax documentation;
- termination, clawback and policy-violation clauses; and
- what happens if a video is removed, claimed by a rights holder or fails to reach the target.
Exclusivity can be the most important economic term. A guaranteed fee may be attractive, but delaying publication on TikTok or another platform can reduce a creator’s usual reach, sponsorship value and audience momentum.

How to check for a legitimate invitation
- Open Instagram and visit your profile.
- Open Professional Dashboard if the account is a creator or business account.
- Look for sections such as Bonuses, Monetization or an invitation notification.
- Review the offer’s eligibility rules, expiration date, content requirements, performance conditions and payout terms.
- Set up payment details only through Instagram’s official in-app flow.
Instagram’s labels and menu locations can change, so this is a likely route rather than a guaranteed current menu sequence. The legacy Reels Play rules said invitations appeared through an in-app pop-up and the Professional Dashboard. A professional account may be required for some monetization products, but switching account type does not guarantee access.
Never pay an intermediary to “unlock” a bonus. Do not send passwords, two-factor authentication codes or backup codes to someone claiming to represent Instagram. Save screenshots of the offer, including its expiration date and terms, and verify that any communication comes through an official Meta channel.
Is moving from TikTok worth it?
For a creator who receives a genuine offer, the decision is an opportunity-cost calculation:

| What must be produced? | Editing, captions, moderation and community management create real costs. |
| How restrictive is exclusivity? | Posting delays can reduce income from other platforms and sponsors. |
| Will the audience transfer? | TikTok followers may not automatically watch or follow on Instagram. |
| How long does the deal last? | A temporary incentive is not the same as durable audience growth. |
| What happens after the campaign? | Creators should avoid depending on a bonus that can be reduced or withdrawn. |
Production software can help, but it does not change the economics of a bad contract. Start with Instagram’s free professional tools and a free or low-cost editor. Upgrade to a more advanced workflow only when output volume, asset management, captions or team collaboration justify it.

The practical conclusion
Large Reels checks existed primarily as strategic recruitment tools. They were designed to persuade selected, successful TikTok creators to bring their skills and audiences to Instagram. They were not a dependable salary, an open application or a payment guarantee for anyone who posts a Reel.
For ordinary creators, the realistic approach is to check the Professional Dashboard for an account-specific invitation, read every condition, and value exclusivity and long-term audience growth alongside the advertised payment.
