Instagram Live Rooms allow one host and up to three guests to appear in the same live broadcast—four people in total. Instagram introduced the feature on March 1, 2021, so “new” is now a historical description rather than a 2026 launch claim. The feature is also different from Instagram Broadcast Channels, which are messaging spaces for posts, polls, photos, video, and voice notes rather than four-person live video.
Live Rooms turn Instagram Live into a small, shared video panel. The host starts the broadcast and invites guests one at a time, or accepts people who have requested to join. Guests can bring their own followers’ attention to the session, but Instagram does not guarantee that a Live Room will receive more viewers, followers, or engagement.
What Instagram Live Rooms are
Before Live Rooms, Instagram Live generally centered on a solo broadcaster or a two-person live format. Live Rooms expanded the shared broadcast to a maximum of four simultaneous participants:

That makes the feature better understood as a four-person live video panel than as a separate streaming network. The host remains the primary broadcaster, while invited guests participate inside the same Instagram Live session.
Meta described Live Rooms as suitable for talk shows, interviews, question-and-answer sessions, tutorials, music, fitness, beauty, cooking, and other creator-led conversations. Those formats are practical examples, not promises that a particular broadcast will perform well.

How to start a four-person Instagram Live Room
Instagram’s labels and navigation can change by app version, device, country, and account type. The usual workflow is:

- Open Instagram and enter the camera or creation screen, commonly through the + button or by swiping to the Instagram camera.
- Select Live.
- Start the live broadcast and wait for the live interface to load.
- Open the control used to invite or add people to the Live. Depending on the current app version, this may be shown as a person, guest, or Rooms icon.
- Choose a viewer or account that has requested to join, then send or accept the invitation.
- Repeat the process until you have added as many as three guests.
Guests can generally be invited individually rather than all added through one group invitation. If the guest control is missing, update Instagram, check whether the account is currently eligible to go live, and try again later. A missing control is not proof that the feature has been permanently removed; Instagram can vary access and interface elements.

Plan the running order before inviting people. With four video feeds, a host should introduce each guest, state who is answering a question, and move between speakers deliberately. A short test of camera position, lighting, headphones, and connection can prevent the conversation from becoming difficult to follow.
Useful formats for Live Rooms
Interviews and panels
A host can interview one guest or moderate a panel of several people without sending viewers to separate broadcasts. For a documentary, media, or current-affairs community, the format can work for a filmmaker discussion, a post-screening conversation, or a panel about a subject covered in a film.
Tutorials and demonstrations
One person can lead the explanation while another demonstrates a technique and a third answers viewer questions. This suits cooking, beauty, craft, fitness, and educational sessions. Demonstrations should be rehearsed with the phone positioned so that the relevant work surface or movement remains visible.
Music and entertainment
Musicians and performers can use the shared session for informal performances, conversations, or jam-style appearances. Audio quality becomes especially important when multiple people are speaking or playing at the same time, so participants should avoid placing several devices close together.
Community conversations and Q&As
Creators can bring several members of a community or several subject-matter voices into one discussion. A moderator or host should collect questions, repeat them clearly, and keep the number of speakers from overwhelming the audience.

Can all four participants bring viewers?
Meta said that followers of guests could also be notified, giving a collaborative Live Room the potential to reach people connected to more than just the host. That is an audience-discovery opportunity, not a distribution guarantee. Notifications depend on Instagram’s systems, follower settings, account status, timing, and audience interest.
Do not present Live Rooms as a guaranteed growth tactic. Adding three guests can also make a broadcast harder to moderate and less coherent if nobody has agreed on roles, timing, or the subject of the discussion.
Moderation and safety controls
According to Meta’s launch information, someone blocked by any active participant could not join the Live Room. Meta also said that guests whose live access had been revoked for Community Guidelines violations could not join.
The host retains tools to report or block comments and apply comment filters. These controls are useful safeguards, but they should not be described as a complete list of Instagram’s current safety features. Review the available controls before going live and assign one participant to watch comments if the discussion is likely to attract a large audience.
Badges, Shopping, and fundraisers
Meta connected Live Rooms with existing Instagram Live features including viewer-purchased badges for eligible hosts, Shopping, and Live Fundraisers. These tools can support a creator’s business or a charitable broadcast, but availability is not universal.

Eligibility can depend on the account, location, age, policy standing, product or fundraiser setup, and the feature’s current rollout. A Live Room does not automatically make every participant eligible for badges or commerce tools, and the presence of a feature in Meta’s 2021 announcement is not proof that it is available to every account in every market today. Check the monetization options shown in the account’s current Instagram interface and the applicable Meta terms. Meta’s later creator and audience tools coverage also helps distinguish Instagram’s wider creator features from Live Rooms themselves.
Optional equipment for a cleaner mobile broadcast
Instagram Live Rooms do not require a tripod, ring light, microphone, or external streaming software. A phone and an eligible Instagram account are the basic starting point. However, a stable mount can make a multi-person conversation easier to frame, while front lighting can keep faces visible in an interview, tutorial, beauty, fitness, or cooking session.
If you are preparing a fixed, face-to-camera setup, a smartphone tripod with ring light is an optional category to compare. Look for a mount that fits the phone securely and a light with brightness or color controls suited to the room. It may improve stability and basic illumination; it does not promise greater reach, algorithmic distribution, or monetization eligibility.

Instagram continues to provide general live-broadcast guidance, but the available documentation does not establish one universal current eligibility matrix covering every country, device, age rule, follower condition, and account type.

A practical checklist before going live
- Confirm the host can access Live and the guest or Rooms control.
- Verify each guest’s account, camera, microphone, connection, and availability.
- Agree on the topic, introductions, speaking order, time limit, and backup plan.
- Frame the host and guests clearly; use an optional stable phone mount and light if the setting requires it.
- Decide who will monitor comments and apply filters or block/report tools if necessary.
- Check whether badges, Shopping, or Live Fundraisers actually appear for the account and market instead of promising them in advance.
- Tell viewers which account is hosting and what the session will cover.
