“We Are the World” was written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson, produced by Quincy Jones and recorded by a large group of artists at A&M Studios in Los Angeles on January 28, 1985. Organized to support African famine relief, the session was scheduled after the American Music Awards so many performers would already be in town. The story is one of songwriting, logistics and musical problem-solving under a hard deadline.
Why the song came together
The project was an American artists’ response to famine-relief efforts in Africa. Activist and entertainer Harry Belafonte was a key voice behind the effort, while Richie and Jackson wrote the charity song and Quincy Jones produced it. Netflix Tudum’s account of the song and Associated Press reporting describe the effort and its origins.
The work did not begin and end in the studio. The song and the practical plans were still being developed in the days before the recording. For its 2024 documentary, The Greatest Night in Pop, the filmmakers drew on audio journalist David Breskin’s recordings from the writing and planning period as well as the session night. The Los Angeles Times’ retrospective on Richie describes Breskin’s recordings extending from the writing process through the artists’ departure the next morning.
How organizers assembled the group
The date was chosen for practical reasons. Richie was hosting the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, and many of the invited performers were already there for the show. Afterward, they went to A&M Studios for an overnight recording, with a narrow window to finish before people had to leave the next morning. AP’s January 2024 report and the Los Angeles Times account outline that schedule.

The roster brought together performers from across popular music, including Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nelson. The number of participants varies among accounts because they may count different parts of the gathering or performance; it is more accurate to describe it as a large ensemble than to treat any single total as definitive. Netflix Media Center’s synopsis calls the gathering “dozens” of artists, while Robert Hilburn’s contemporaneous 1985 Los Angeles Times report says 45 artists began singing the chorus.
What happened during the overnight recording
Quincy Jones managed the musical and human logistics
Jones had to shape a unified recording from many distinctive voices while keeping the session moving. Hilburn’s report describes a concrete adjustment: when the opening chorus proved too high for some singers, Jones stopped the prerecorded instrumental and had it reconstituted in a more comfortable key. That decision balanced the arrangement against the abilities of the group, rather than asking every singer to force a part that did not suit them.

Hilburn reported that Jones called the gathering a “space-age Woodstock.” The phrase captures the scale of the event, but the account also shows its practical side: a recording had to be made, performers had to be placed and managed, and the clock was running.
Small complications mattered
AP’s account of The Greatest Night in Pop recounts several moments from the studio: Cyndi Lauper’s jewelry interfered with recording, Bob Dylan needed help finding an approach to his solo, Prince did not attend, and Kenny Loggins suggested Huey Lewis take the solo after Jackson. These are details reported in the documentary and AP’s coverage, not proof that every anecdote has been independently corroborated. They nevertheless show why a polished group performance required more than bringing famous singers into one room.

Director Bao Nguyen described the night as “an honest story about the night and all the things that could have gone wrong — that did go wrong — but at the end of the day, it became this beautiful family,” AP reported on January 29, 2024. Richie, speaking about the result in Netflix Tudum’s November 2024 feature, said: “By 7 o’clock in the morning, we became a family.”
How the documentaries tell the story
The Greatest Night in Pop, directed by Bao Nguyen and released in 2024, revisits both the preparation and the January 28 session. Its account combines interviews with participants and archival footage; AP reports that the filmmakers paired images from four cameras with Breskin’s audio recorded around the original planning and recording. Netflix Media Center’s official listing for the film describes the artists’ January 28 gathering and the archival approach.
A separate film, We Are the World: The Story Behind the Song, was made in 1985. It is not the same documentary as The Greatest Night in Pop. Netflix’s listing for the 1985 film identifies its title and subject, but currently shows an unavailability notice tied to the viewer’s country. That notice does not establish that the film is unavailable everywhere; access depends on territory.

The recording’s immediate reception is part of the story, but period figures should be read in context. Hilburn reported in March 1985 that the initial shipment of 800,000 copies had sold out within three days of release. That is a contemporaneous report about the initial shipment, not an independently audited total for the single’s lifetime sales.
