The fight over Michael Jackson’s estate centers on who can manage its assets while probate remains open, how the estate’s finances and legal bills are accounted for, and what oversight beneficiaries can seek. A 2024 appeals court upheld the executors’ authority to complete one disputed business transaction; separate, later litigation over legal-fee payments led to a reported 2026 order requiring $625,000 in bonuses paid to outside law firms to be returned. The “$2 billion” in the original framing is not established by the sources reviewed as a current audited valuation.
What is the fight over Michael Jackson’s estate about?
Michael Jackson’s will directs his estate to the Michael Jackson Family Trust, whose principal beneficiaries are his three children. But the California Court of Appeal said in its August 21, 2024 opinion that the estate’s assets had not yet been distributed to the trust. The court noted that disputes with the IRS and others were among the reasons the assets remained under probate supervision. California Court of Appeal opinion

The dispute has two distinct strands. One concerns the executors’ authority to manage estate property before probate ends. Another, reported in later coverage, concerns Paris Jackson’s efforts to scrutinize accounting and payments for legal work. A decision on the first issue does not settle every objection in the second.
What did the appeals court decide?
In August 2024, the California Second District Court of Appeal affirmed a probate court decision authorizing a transaction in which estate property was transferred to a joint venture in exchange for cash and an interest in that venture. Katherine Jackson had challenged the transaction. The appellate court said one of her arguments had been forfeited because it was not raised in the probate court; it also considered the will’s terms and concluded that the transaction was within the executors’ authority.

The court read the will as establishing both an eventual transfer of estate property to the family trust and broad powers for the executors to manage, sell, and invest property while probate continued. It explained: “Read together, they give the executors broad powers to manage estate property while the estate remains in probate, and they provide for the transfer of all estate property to the trust when the probate action is concluded.”
On the specific transaction before it, the court concluded: “The proposed transaction is consistent with the terms of Michael’s will as so interpreted, and thus the probate court did not abuse its discretion by granting the executors’ petition.” That is a ruling about the transaction on appeal—not a blanket approval of every later accounting choice or legal payment. What is the reported dispute over legal fees?
ABC News reported in May 2026 that a judge ordered $625,000 in bonuses paid to outside law firms returned to the estate. According to that report, the executors’ lawyers said the executors respected the decision and planned to proceed accordingly, while disagreeing with it. Their reported response also stressed that the bonus payments went to outside counsel, not to the executors themselves. The report describes a court order; the primary order and full docket are not established here. ABC News report
The distinction matters: the reported order concerns bonuses paid to outside firms. It should not be recast as an order to return money paid to the executors.

What have the parties said about benefits and estate management?
The Independent reported that executors argued Paris Jackson had received roughly $65 million in benefits from the estate and claimed their management had transformed its finances. Those are the executors’ claims as described in reporting, not independent accounting findings or a verified measure of the estate’s value. The Independent timeline
The same timeline says that in November 2025 a judge struck claims based on the estate’s own court filings under California anti-SLAPP protections. The report also says Paris Jackson’s representatives intended to submit an updated filing. That procedural ruling should not be treated as a finding that every broader concern she raised was false. Is the estate worth $2 billion?
The sources reviewed do not establish a current, audited valuation of the estate at exactly $2 billion. The figure belongs to the original headline framing; it should not be treated as a verified present-day value. Nor does the reported $65 million in benefits establish an estate valuation: that amount is attributed to the executors’ filing, as reported by The Independent.
What remains unresolved?
The 2024 appellate opinion confirms that, at that time, assets remained under probate supervision and had not yet been distributed to the trust. It does not establish the estate’s complete status in October 2026. The 2026 fee ruling is described in news reporting rather than through the primary order or a full current docket, so later procedural events, appeals, deadlines, and the present distribution status cannot be stated as settled here.

The clearest way to understand the dispute is to keep its parts separate: the executors’ authority to manage assets during probate, the eventual direction to transfer estate property to the trust, and the later reported challenge to accounting and outside legal-fee payments.
