In a 2015 interview, Malek also described how the production handled Elliot’s internal monologue: he listened to a crew member read the lines through a small earpiece so the voice would affect his performance without disrupting his scene partners.
How Malek understood Elliot
In Melanie McFarland’s GeekWire interview, published August 18, 2015, Malek described Elliot as someone trying to withdraw from the world while still seeking connection. “Elliot is trying to numb himself from the world and remove himself, in a way,” he said. “But at the same time, Elliot’s on the search for humanity as well.”

That tension shaped Malek’s approach to the role. Elliot’s isolation is not simply indifference to other people; as Malek described him, it coexists with a desire for humanity. The character’s retreat into computers offered a kind of peace, Malek said—a response opposite to his own experience.
How he researched hacking and coding
Malek said he watched documentaries about hacking, computers and coding to understand the material he was performing and to imagine how Elliot’s mind worked. “I just have to research everything,” he said. He described the research as a way to enter the character’s thought process, not as preparation to teach viewers how to hack.

Mr. Robot presents Elliot as a cybersecurity engineer at Allsafe and a vigilante hacker associated with fsociety. The interview frames the series as a dark conspiracy thriller with technical and psychological themes; it does not establish the show’s scenes as a cybersecurity guide.
How the show handled Elliot’s inner voice
For scenes in which Elliot’s internal voice was part of the performance, Malek wore a small earpiece while a female crew member read the inner lines to him. He preferred that approach to having someone read off-screen on set, which he felt could alter the other actors’ performances.

“I don’t like that method, because I think that when there’s a P.A. or someone reading, it alters everyone’s performance,” Malek said. “I want to keep it secure and personal and have my thoughts only affecting me.”
The earpiece gave Malek a private cue for Elliot’s thoughts while letting him respond in the scene. It is a practical production choice as well as an acting one: the inner voice needed to register for Malek without becoming an unintended influence on his scene partners.

Technical dialogue, drama and audience reactions
The interview addressed the challenge of making technical dialogue understandable without pausing the story for a lecture. Malek acknowledged that dramatic television has limits when it comes to technical accuracy. He recalled hearing praise from people in the tech community, but also described one viewer’s criticism of how the series depicted social anxiety across episodes.
Those comments are Malek’s recollections from the interview, not the results of an audience survey or an independent assessment of the show’s accuracy. His account points to the balance the series was trying to strike: technical material had to serve the drama, while Elliot’s psychology remained central to the performance.
