How John Goodman met Anna Beth
Accounts agree that Goodman met Anna Beth in New Orleans, but they attach the meeting to different films. In a December 1989 Los Angeles Times interview, Goodman said she was a college student when they met while he was filming The Big Easy. Read the Los Angeles Times interview. Biography.com instead places their meeting during the filming of Everybody’s All-American (1988). See Biography.com’s account. The available accounts do not resolve that difference, so the clearest shared detail is the city and period: New Orleans in the late 1980s.
When they married
Goodman’s 1989 interview described Anna Beth as his wife and looked ahead to their first Christmas together as a married couple: “It will be my first Christmas there with Annabeth (his nickname for his wife, the former Anna Elizabeth Hartzog).” The article identified 1989 as the year he married. Biography.com specifies October 1989. The sources use several spellings of her name; CBS News identifies her as Anna Beth Hartzog, while the contemporary newspaper used “Annabeth.”
Their daughter and the move to New Orleans
Goodman and Anna Beth have a daughter, Molly. A 2012 CBS News interview described Molly, then 22, as an aspiring filmmaker. Read the CBS News interview. Biography.com gives her full name as Molly Evangeline and her birth date as August 31, 1990; that exact date comes from a secondary biography, rather than the interviews.

In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, Goodman connected the family’s move from California to New Orleans with his wish to keep his daughter away from show-business publicity as Roseanne grew successful. The move also brought the family closer to Anna Beth’s Louisiana relatives. Read The Guardian interview.

Asked about the secret to staying married in the 2015 Guardian interview, Goodman answered, “listening and patience.” It is his description of what matters to him, not a claim about Anna Beth’s perspective.

In the 2012 CBS interview, he spoke appreciatively about small daily moments: “I’m learning the important things in life, which are petting my dogs, saying hi to my wife, looking at this beautiful city. Little things that I just missed or I just slept through for 30 years.” His comments link family life with a quieter sense of home in New Orleans.
