Reports say Livia Giuggioli had a relationship with Italian journalist Marco Brancaccia in 2015–16, while she and Colin Firth were temporarily separated. The dispute later became public through a stalking or harassment accusation that Brancaccia disputed. In 2018, reports said the accusations were withdrawn and the parties reached an out-of-court agreement. Firth and Giuggioli announced their separation in December 2019, but gave no public reason for it.
What happened, and when?
The public account spans several years, and the reported relationship, the allegations against Brancaccia and the couple’s later separation are distinct events. Contemporary reporting attributed the relationship and the accusation to Giuggioli; later reports described an agreement and the Firths’ announcement.

What was reported about the relationship and allegations?
In March 2018, Corriere della Sera reported that Giuggioli had acknowledged a relationship with Brancaccia in 2015–16. The report placed it during a temporary separation between Giuggioli and Firth. That is the reported context; it does not establish what the couple privately agreed about their relationship at the time.
The dispute also included Giuggioli’s accusation that Brancaccia had stalked or harassed her. Brancaccia disputed the accusations, according to the reporting. These were allegations and a denial, not findings of guilt by a court.

How did the dispute end?
ANSA later reported that the accusations were withdrawn and that Giuggioli and Brancaccia reached an out-of-court agreement in 2018. The report said the agreement was for the benefit of the parties’ families. An agreement and the withdrawal of accusations do not, by themselves, establish either guilt or innocence.
What did Firth and Giuggioli say when they separated?
On 14 December 2019, their representatives issued a joint statement reproduced by ANSA: “Colin and Livia Firth have separated. They remain friends and united in their love for their children. They ask that their privacy be respected. There will be no further comment.” The statement gave no reason for the separation.

Did the earlier relationship cause their 2019 separation?
The public reports do not establish that it did. The 2018 relationship was reported as having occurred during a temporary separation, while the December 2019 announcement confirmed a later separation without explaining why.
