James Earl Jones and actor Cecilia Hart met while working on the television series Paris, married in 1982 and had one son, Flynn. Jones later described Hart as someone who made him laugh and helped him relax enough to be himself. That reflection, published in his 1993 memoir Voices and Silences, is the clearest window into their relationship in the public record described by PEOPLE.
How James Earl Jones and Cecilia Hart met
Jones and Hart met on Paris, a police procedural that ran for 13 episodes between 1979 and 1980, according to Jack Smart’s PEOPLE account published September 9, 2024. Jones played Detective Captain “Woody” Paris, while Hart played Sergeant Stacey Erickson. Their relationship began while they were working on the same series.
They married in 1982 and worked together again
Jones and Hart appeared together in a production of Othello in 1982. They married that year at the United Nations chapel in New York City. PEOPLE describes their marriage as lasting 34 years, from their 1982 wedding until Hart’s death in 2016.
In a 2012 interview with The New York Times, Jones said their son was conceived on their wedding night, as PEOPLE recounts. Their son, Flynn, was the couple’s child.

What Jones said about being with Hart
In his 1993 memoir Voices and Silences, Jones described Hart’s effect on him this way: “She made me laugh. She was stimulating. And she did not seem to take me seriously at all, which meant I could relax and be myself with her.” The recollection is Jones’s own retrospective account, reproduced by PEOPLE.
PEOPLE also cites Jones’s brief description of Hart in an interview with The New York Times: “She’s how I stay grounded.” These remarks express what he said about their companionship; they do not establish details beyond what he chose to share publicly.
Hart’s death and Jones’s public tribute
Hart died in 2016 at age 68 from ovarian cancer, according to PEOPLE. Jones died on September 9, 2024, at age 93, the same PEOPLE account reports.
At the 2017 Tony Awards, where he accepted a Special Tony for Lifetime Achievement, Jones thanked Hart publicly. “I want to thank my wife Ceci for being such a wonderful companion in my life and in my work. And for being the great co-producer of our son Flynn and for being so dazzling on the red carpet,” he said, as reported by PEOPLE.

What the record establishes about their relationship
The documented outline is straightforward: Jones and Hart met as fellow actors on Paris, married in 1982, had Flynn, and shared work including a production of Othello. Jones’s memoir and public remarks offer his own description of Hart as a source of laughter, ease and grounding. Beyond those attributed statements and reported milestones, the available account does not support broader claims about the couple’s private life.
