Audubon’s Summer 2016 feature followed volunteers as they fed nestlings and fledglings, cleaned enclosures, washed laundry and learned specialized procedures from experienced staff. The objective was not to keep young birds tame: it was to return releasable animals to the wild.
The feature is a dated look at the unit, not a current operating report or proof that it is formally Connecticut’s largest nursery. Sharon Audubon’s current clinic information confirms an active, state- and federally licensed rehabilitation facility that treats hundreds of sick, injured and orphaned birds and other wildlife, but it does not publish a current annual intake total or operating budget.
What the nursery is—and what “biggest” means here
Sharon Audubon’s baby unit is part of the Sharon Audubon Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic, located at the 1,000-acre Sharon Audubon Center in northwest Connecticut. The center was founded in 1961. In the Summer 2016 feature, Audubon said the baby unit was entering its 40th year and described Sharon Audubon as one of the few facilities in the Housatonic Valley specializing in avian care.
That article does not establish a statewide ranking. Its “biggest” framing should therefore be read as a description of a prominent, high-volume nursery rather than a verified Connecticut-wide superlative. The clinic’s current page uses the broader word “hundreds” for the wildlife it treats and supplies no present-day intake or cost statistics.

A day built around release, not display
Feeding on a species-and-age schedule
Volunteers feed nestlings and fledglings repeatedly throughout the day. The 2016 account emphasizes that there is no universal nursery menu: diets are adjusted for species and age. Nestling songbirds and fledgling songbirds, for example, receive different foods and care routines. Experienced staff teach volunteers the more delicate procedures.
These descriptions are observations from a professional rehabilitation setting, not a public recipe. Wild birds can be harmed by inappropriate food, fluids or handling. Anyone who finds a young bird should follow Connecticut state guidance and contact an authorized rehabilitator instead of copying a nursery diet.
Cleaning is part of medical care
Feeding is only one part of the work. Volunteers clean enclosures and manage a steady stream of laundry, tasks that help control contamination and keep birds in appropriate surroundings. The feature presents this repetitive labor as essential to rehabilitation, even when it is less visible than handling an injured bird.
Learning under supervision
New volunteers do not begin with the most sensitive procedures. The feature describes them learning from experienced staff as they gain competence. That structure protects vulnerable patients and gives the clinic a consistent way to prepare people for species-specific work.

Which birds pass through the unit?
In the 2016 report, songbirds and raptors represented 80 percent of the clientele. The caseload included young birds as well as injured adults. Some patients recovered and could be released; others had injuries or disabilities that made life in the wild impossible.
Patients that returned to nature
Rehabilitation is successful when a bird can function independently in its natural environment. That means a release candidate must be able to obtain appropriate food, avoid danger and carry out normal movement and behavior without human support. The 2016 feature follows this goal throughout the nursery’s routine.
Permanent education residents
Birds that cannot survive in the wild may remain as education animals rather than being released. The feature names Eastern Screech-Owls, a Broad-winged Hawk, a Turkey Vulture and a Peregrine Falcon among the animals associated with the center. Their role is different from that of a nursery patient: they support public education because a safe release is not possible.
What the 2016 numbers show
The following figures come from Audubon’s Summer 2016 feature. They describe that period only; they are not current performance measures.

| Figure | What it described | Date and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About 350 birds per year | Sharon Audubon’s reported average caseload | Reported by Audubon in 2016 |
| 280 patients | Patients received so far in the year at publication time | 2016 year-to-date figure |
| $39,000 | Money spent on mice alone | 2016 expense reported by Audubon; donations and grants offset much of the cost |
| 80 percent | Share of clientele made up by songbirds and raptors | 2016 clientele mix |
The current clinic page confirms that Sharon Audubon continues to treat hundreds of sick, injured and orphaned birds and other wildlife, but it does not give a new annual total or a current food budget. Comparing the 2016 figures with an unstated present-day number would create a false trend.
Why volunteers describe the work as rewarding
The feature captures the emotional side of a demanding routine. Volunteer Vicki Lynch says, “This is my happy place.” Her comment sits alongside the unglamorous work of washing, cleaning and repeating feeding rounds.
Volunteer Nicole Castaneda explains the intended endpoint: “Once they’re like, ‘I don’t need you anymore,’ ” Castaneda says, “that’s really what we’re going for.” Independence, rather than attachment to people, is the measure of progress.
Center director Sean Grace describes the clinic’s wider responsibility this way: “Everyone in the community—human and beyond—uses us as a resource. There’s a lot riding on us.” The statement covers both the public service provided to people who find wildlife and the obligation to make decisions that serve the animals.

What to do when a young bird is on the ground
Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) separates normal fledgling behavior from situations that need rehabilitation. The safest response depends on feathers, mobility, the nest and any sign of injury.
If a mostly naked or lightly feathered nestling has fallen
- Look for the original nest. If it is intact and reachable, gently return the chick. DEEP says parents will not abandon a chick because a person touched it; birds have a poor sense of smell.
- If the nest is destroyed or unreachable, make a nearby substitute. DEEP recommends a woven or stick basket with drainage. Place it high near the original nest so the parents can locate it and continue care.
- Watch from a distance. Keep people and pets away while the parents have an opportunity to return.
- Contact a rehabilitator if the parents do not return after 24 hours or more. Use DEEP’s authorized listings and describe the species, age and circumstances.
If the bird is fully feathered and nearly full-sized
A fledgling on the ground may be learning to fly while its parents continue feeding it. DEEP advises leaving it where it is and keeping cats and dogs indoors. Moving a healthy fledgling can separate it from the adults that are caring for it.
If the bird is injured or clearly orphaned
Visible wounds, inability to fly when an adult should be flying, a limp body, a cat or dog attack, or a dead parent nearby are reasons to seek professional advice. Do not offer food or water while deciding what to do; an untrained feeding attempt can cause aspiration or other harm. Call an authorized wildlife rehabilitator and follow its instructions for containment and transport.

Connecticut DEEP lists Sharon Audubon Center among authorized contacts for small birds, hawks and owls, with the listing’s species limitations. Rehabilitators do not all accept the same species or age classes, so confirm that the clinic can take the bird you found.

What visitors and potential volunteers should understand
The nursery is not a pet-care operation
Rehabilitation aims to minimize human dependence. Staff and volunteers use controlled contact, species-appropriate housing and supervised care so that releasable birds retain the behaviors they need outside captivity. A bird that appears calm around people is not necessarily healthy or suitable for release.
The visible work is only part of the program
Feeding rounds, enclosure cleaning and laundry occupy much of a volunteer’s day. Behind those tasks are intake decisions, record keeping, diet preparation, assessment of injuries, coordination with licensed staff and release planning. The 2016 feature gives readers a glimpse of this system without turning it into a do-it-yourself manual.
Identification can help, but it is not treatment
A North American bird field guide can help a finder describe a species when calling a rehabilitator. Identification is optional, however, and should never delay a call about an injured bird. A guide cannot replace professional advice on stabilization, transport or medical care.

The lasting lesson from Sharon Audubon’s baby unit
The 2016 account shows a nursery sustained by specialized knowledge and a large amount of routine labor. Its historical figures—about 350 birds a year, 280 patients received by publication time in 2016 and $39,000 spent on mice—illustrate the scale and expense of that work without describing today’s operations. The current clinic continues the same central mission: provide licensed rehabilitation and release wildlife whenever release is possible.
For the public, the practical lesson is just as important. A chick on the ground is not automatically abandoned, and touching a nestling does not make its parents reject it. Reunite a nestling with its nest when possible, leave a healthy fledgling near its parents, and use Connecticut’s authorized rehabilitator network when injury, true orphaning or uncertainty makes expert help necessary.
